Seagate expanion drive-best way to prolong its life?

Hi there,
I bought a 1tb seagate expanion drive in dec 09 and it started to do a clicking sound a few weeks ago as well as a warning about its health when I installed wubi ubuntu linux. Did some research on internet and it seems this is a common problem with these seagate drives.
Anyways I sent it back and just got it back today. Just a replacement not a new drive but so far so good.
Just wondering what is the best way to prolong the life of this drive so that I may get more than a year out of this one? Is it perfectly reasonable to have it connected to the computer for most of the day (wont actually be using it that much more of a backup drive?)
or is it asking to much to have it spinning for 12 hours a day or more?
thanks a lot for any advice
joe

My seagates been connected to my computer for about 3 years now without a hitch and it does some SERIOUS work
My best suggestion is keep the hardrive free from external vibrations:idea:0
