o2 Upgrades

Grr i hate moneygrabbing companies!!
The gf is due for an upgrade on her phone this month so phoned up o2 to ask if they could offer her a better deal than she has at the moment, along with a free phone (sony ericsson k800i). They said they couldnt better her deal, and the upgrade charge is £80 for the phone! That's £80 for a phone that a new customer can get for free if they join!
After being put through to various supervisors they couldnt give a straight answer as to why it was £80, and none of them would budge.
So now she has to cancel teh contract and take out a new one with a new number, just to get the phone free.....why do they do this? surely its more hassle to sign a new customer than just trasnfer!!
Grr very annoyed bout this

P.S before anyone suggests going to another company, the O2 online deals are the best around!

  • I've always been able to get the latest top phone from O2 when I've upgraded, unless this particular phone is out of their range for a freebie? I think they allow only a certain amount?

Why not phone back and ask someone else?! Different staff seem to say different things! Or ask what phones she is entitled to?

Failing that, do the "I'm leaving" stuff - it's amazing what they give you - at least they gave me lots when I threatened to move to 3 a couple of years back!!

I had a similar upgrade experience with O2!
For the last two years when i have tried to upgrade my phone they quote rubbish models that i am entitled to or i can have a decent one for a ridiculous upgrade price.

I found that the best thing to do (and i have done this for two consecutive years) is to call cs and tell them you would like to cancel your contract. They will ask why and i normally say, i wanted to upgrade but i'm being offered very poor upgrade models when i can get a new contract with another company and get a great phone for free. They ask what model you were looking at, you tell them, they put you on hold and come back and say thats fine (last year they also knocked £5 off my tariff per month)

BUT i tried this in October and asked for that model of Sony Ericsson and they said there was no way they could do it for free so i got the latest Nokia instead. I am on a very low tariff though, and they calculate your entitlement from how much you spend on your bills. Give it a go!
2011 wins so far: Radio Deal package worth £600 :)

    Best prizes ever:
Two flights to Tokyo & a years supply of Gas and Electric !!! :D
Thanks to everyone that posts!
  • Yea she's had the rubbish about getting a cheap phone for free etc....its not any better than her current model so no point!
She tried threatening to leave and spoken to a number of different people but they wont budge...they've given her a PUK code to move company with! I never thought they'd do that...they offered me a new deal when i threatened to leave.
Her tariff is £25 a month, which usually secures the latest phones free, and especially given the k800i has been out a few months!
Its just thoroughly annoying, with them having no consistency bewtween customers or staff....oh well, she's going to give it another go before they shut at 9pm tonight

    Thanks for comments
