in Credit cards
Hi All,
I am new to the site, so hello and ignore me if i dont make any sense lol
I had an American Express card in 07 and due to personal circumstances (death in the family) was in a lot of debt and a debt company became involved AIC, who were incredibly ruthless and chased me almost hourly for weeks - the experience was overwhelming. Anyway, through family & friends i managed to raise the money to pay off what i owed in May and June 2007.
At the time i was confused and had thought that i seemed to pay too much, but as AIC were on my case i paid what they said and i got a standard letter saying the debt was closed and nothing else.
I rang American Express after and they stated that they owed me nothing so i thought i was wrong.
I never recieved a statement from American Express so presume i would never get one.
Very very weridly Just before XMAS i got a statement and this said that my account was in credit by £720.36. It said that my account was closed and being dealt with my a debt company. It also said that my account was in credit and if i wanted a refund to call for one!!!
I then rang them and they said that i didnt owe anything and that the money was actually owed to AIC and that i could not persue the claim. I did stand my guns and i asked for a statement showing the payments made etc. Two weeks ago i recieved a letter they were ivestigating my complaint.
Today i recieved a letter saying that they had looked into my complaint and that after the two payments in May and June 2007 had cleared my account and left it in credit. They apologiesed for it and say they are sending me a cheque within 7 days which will be their final offer.
Does anyone think i should write back to them demanding compensation as they have had my money since June 2007 and tell them i am writing to the FO. Or shoulf i write to the FO direct. They have had my money all that time and i am so angry. Can anyone help? Thanks so much Minnie.

All you need to do is to go through their complaints procedure - which should take no more than 8 weeks. After that you are free to contact the ombudsman.0
