IP Forwarding/Pointing

Can anyone help me,last weekend I set up a website for a holiday home website for a house I want to rent out in Cornwall, I know very little about computers or websites but thought I would give it a go, so I registered the domain name at 123 and tried building a website, paid (£7.50 or thereabouts for 2 years for the domain). Tried building it on the 123 site and it was terrible but then I came accross a website builder site called quickonthenet, paid the £7.50 a month fee and bobs your uncle I was away, the thing is im not sure i've got it exactly right, there are two methods apparently, one is web forwarding (I think this is what ive done) and the other web pointing. apparently web pointing is better for people to find the site on web searches, my site seems to be invicible to google at the moment.

I tried to upgrade and pay the £4.50 upgrade to enable me to web point, but this upgrade directs me to registering a domain name, but i've already got one, so what do I need to do?, tried their online support but getting knowhere, they just keep saying I should upgrade and pay the £4.50 and go with the web pointing, but ive got my own domain.

any help please

If you have a domain name you will need to change the "DNS" of your domain name to point to the internet address of your website.

I've never used "123reg" or "Quickonthenet" so the below instructions are general.
Hopefully someone who's used those sites can give you detailed instructions...

First go to your "quickonthenet" site and check the settings they should give you an IP address of your website.
test it by typing it into your browser, if your site comes up all is good and go to the next bit
if not check the help pages of the site builder. they should have given you an ip address.

Go to your 123reg (?) website and go to your control panel and look for "DNS" settings.
There should be an entry for "WWW"
Edit that "WWW" setting and enter in the IP address you got in the first bit,

If all goes well, you'll see your website pop up using your domain name in an hour or so...

*note* it may take a while for google to find your site.

If you have the domain name registered with 123reg and the site hosted elsewhere, then the best way is to change the DNS server names in the 123reg control panel to point to your web host - they will tell you what the names should be.

I've been into the 123 control panel and I think web forwarded my site, but I think I should be web pointing if I want to get the google hits, not sure how to do this, as I say, they keep directing me to upgrade my quickonthenet subscription by an extra £4.50 a month on top of the basic £7.50, but the £4.50 seems an option to buy your own domain(which I already have)

Forget forwarding, just select 'change nameservers' in the 123reg control panel, and enter the nameservers that quickonthenet give you. It can take up to 48 hours for DNS to fully update across the net.

Apologies, but I think this is probably too much for me to comprehend, im too old to understand most of this
  • Found this on the quickonthenet site which should help you:

If you already have a domain name that you wish to use, please contact us about your existing Domain registration. Just tell us the precise name, extension and where it was registered. You will need your domain control panel username and password. If you have lost them, please get new password details from your registrar and then contact us.

Unfortunately I cannot link the page as im fairly new and this site won't let me yet :( but if you look around on the quickonthenet site under the "register a domain" page you should find the information you need.
