Would love to try the straw method, but supplies are not plentiful around here (we are surrounded by farms but it is all used for bedding etc), and I would need one heck of a lot for the 120+ spuds I'm doing.
There is something lovely about digging up spuds, the perfect yellow tubers shining at you through the soil.......love it, it's a bit like Christmas as you never know how big or how many there will be. And after you've dug them all, just have another quick fork through the soil as there are always a few that you miss.
yeh lovely .... and backbreaking lol and like you say -- you never get em all leaving loadsa rogue volunteers the next year causing mayhem in whatever you have sown next.
we also live surrounded by farms on the outskirts of leeds - look in your phone book for farmers one of em will happily deliver you one of those huge round bales of straw - thats what i did ! cost me 20 squids and yeh id say i plant around 100 tatties too0 -

I got my pack of Rooster seeds from Morissons- £1 a pack.
I got great results from them last year so have them again for this year!:D0 -
Why do you have to buy them in Jan, latest in Feb????
I only bought my last week, they are in egg boxes chitting away..
Will there be a problem?0 -
I've got 4 varieties chitting away in egg boxes on all the children's window sills. The sunflowers on them are already 8 inches high, but the potatoes must only have 1/3rd of an inch tubes growing from them - they've been there about 2 weeks. Am I doing something wrong?I am firmly across the line. I won't impose my values on you if you keep away from mine.

Hello all,
I have just received my 'potato vales emerald growing kit' having never grown potatoes before and I would like a little help please.
Reading the OP's info (thanks) is it too late for chitting? If they take 6 weeks to chit will it be too late to plant out? Should I just plant them in the bag?
Sorry for so many questions.0 -
