Help with aol wireless network and mac please!

Hi there was after a bit of advice if anmy of you techies would be so kind:

We have finally got internet at our student house with aol - the bits arrived today and after much hassle we finally got the modem/router to work wirelessly. However my girlfriend has an ibook and this would not connect though its airport to the network - it finds it but does not acept the network key/password (its 24 long so we think this may be too long?)

anyway i called tech support again who said nope does not work with macs, i then said i had called to check this before ordering and was toldit was fine as the mac does not use any aol software it just finds the router. then the gut xhanged his mind and basically said yes it will work and told me to change the wep setting to off. this worke dok but he said it is not possible to allow the mac to connect with security on.

so (sorry for the essay) i want to know if there is a way i can keep the network secure which will allow us to still connect the mac?

ps on a sidenote my desktop has no wireless - would a internal card be better than a usb dongle as he usb slows the connection, or does it make no difference?

wpa is more secure than wep btw.
