Sony vaio rip

I bought my husband a Sony Vaio All in One Model PCG - 2 HIM in November 2009 as a present, it was from PC World in Merthyr and was ex demo so relatively cheap (£800).

Recently it just died :eek:and after an investigation by the local independent computer shop, the motherboard was pronounced cracked and beyond repair, it was sent to Birmingham by the inde shop for 'assessment' but the repairer in Birmingham could not repair it.

The inde computer shop owner was pretty scathing about the design of this computer saying that the fans are not adequate and this caused overheating and consequent damage to the motherboard.

Any ideas about what to do? Is it worth trying to find another motherboard - if so it will risk the same problem happening again. I just feel so fed up with this as it has not been heavily used 2 hours a day max and its so much money down the drain. :o

contact the retailer, ask for a free repair, replacement, or partial refund under the sale of goods act.

    £800 isn't cheap.

As it is over 6 months the SOGA states it should then be manufacturer(IIRC) but take it to the shop anyway first and foremost - they will probably take it to the manufacturers for a repair or replacement

Is that not just for the nvidia chip Closed or will it cover for a cracked motherboard as well?

Agree that for £800 it should last longer than just over a year

If you have a look at the Sales of Goods you might possibly be able to claim (upto 6 years after purchase) that it was an inherent fault or not fit for purpose but you would be required to prove that......have a look here...........

As Closed has mentioned contact the retailer first and see what they can do.

What is the model number of the Vaio?

An update. Took poor computer into PC World but this was a waste of time, but the staff member advised me to contact their Call Centre. I did this and spoke to a very helpful person. Yes the computer may be covered by the Sale of Goods Act. They wanted a report.

We contacted the independent who supplied a report for £25 (he says he does this a lot) and posted off the report plus letter plus copy of the receipt (though they knew we had bought it because it was on their system) to PC World Contact Centre.

Since then I have been contacted by the Resolutions Centre and am waiting to speak to the staff member. When I have an outcome I will post it up - it will be interesting to see if they will settle and for how much.

does your model have the nvidia 8400M GPU?

    edit: saw the link

Sony UK are honouring the 3 year warranty on this issue(so it seems)

I have one of their all in one models and the GPU is causing issues
I contacted them and have had an email to send details regarding getting the item collected for repair
    Thank you for contacting us.
From the fault description you have provided, we understand that your vaio needs to be picked up for in warranty repair. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Pick Up Instructions and Terms and conditions :
    1. The courier will come to collect the VAIO during office hours – it is not possible to specify a particular timeframe.
    2. Sony is not responsible for any data loss – it is strongly recommended that you back up all data, settings and applications before having the VAIO collected.
    3. Remove all peripherals from your VAIO (eg. Memory Sticks, DVD’s, dongles etc.)
    4. Remove the A/C Adaptor and battery - these are not needed unless there is a suspected power issue.
    5. Ensure the collection box is sealed in your presence, and take the end-user copy of the AWB as proof of collection. Do not give the VAIO to the courier if the courier is without a box.
    6. The turnaround time is 8 working days on average. This will increase if the correct parts are not available at the time of repair.
    7. If the VAIO is diagnosed as falling outside of the terms of guarantee, then the repair will be treated as 'Out Of Warranty' and will be chargeable. The repair team will then contact you with a quote. If you decide not to proceed with the repair after receiving the repair quote, then a 'return unrepaired' fee will be due, which covers diagnosis and logistics costs. The cost for this would be: ******* including VAT.
    8. Once you have accepted these terms and conditions, the collection will go ahead on the agreed date.
If you accept the terms and conditions as listed above, please reply with the following:
    1. Your preferred dates for collection - please know that we can collect on weekdays only.
    2. The address for collection and return of the VAIO – please indicate if you require separate collection and return addresses.
    3. The serial number of the VAIO. http://genesis.sony-europe.com/instranet/ccil_sony/selfservice/index.jsp?DocId=42410&l=en_GB
    4. The date of purchase of the VAIO.
    5. The installation language of the VAIO.
    6. Your mobile phone number, and another preferred contact number.
    7. Your login and password, and the BIOS password if you have set one.
    8. Your email address (providing you can access your email without your VAIO).

Should you have any further questions or inquiries, please feel free to reply to this email or contact us on

    Further update:

Contacted by Contact Centre, PC World. In addition to receipt and engineers report, wanted the Tech Boys in a PC World also to do a report, so I took it in and the kind technician duly declared the motherboard dead and phoned the Contact Centre.

Hopefully a decision will come soon, you have to be patient.

Really? The only time I've seen that is when someone has jumped on it or left it on their car roof, its fallen on the floor and been reversed over.

I would get a second opinion.

As custardy said, if its got a nVidia 8000 series chipset, there is a problem with all 8000 series chipsets which nVidia made an announcement on so anything with that chipset is returnable under SOGA up to 5 or 6 years old as it is a manufacturing fault.

Resolved, email received for a credit note of £496.(out of which should be taken an independent report and two trips to PC World). Not a bad result and the case worker for the complaint was very good :T in the end. Only moan - it is a credit note for the Dixons Group and the range they have at the moment is not brilliant.

Would have probably got a better but slower result through the Sony route.

Thanks for all your help. MSE works. :A
