  • It is also worth mentioning that the last time i used it was about October due the the harsh winter. Obviously I have not been able to ride it since as it doesn't start anymore. But the main rust appeared over the winter while it was covered in the back garden. You can't prevent moisture on the bike if it is used and kept outside. I will keep the forum updated on the progress and outcome, obviously I can't post too much an here at the moment but I exhausting my options before taking it to the small claims court. But as I mentioned previously, Watchdog reported that Direct Bikes have already lost claims in court which were not paid at the time of reporting. But this was a couple of years ago now. I can't believe that they are still trading.

Oh please, I have been riding motorcycles for very nearly thirty-five years. I have never experienced such a thing. I would clean them usually about once a week, sometimes less frequently. I have never experienced rust on the scale the OP is describing. I wonder what my car should look like; I haven't cleaned that in six weeks.

Oo what a biking hero -
no need to be so patronising, I was writing down from my own experience and I have been riding motorbikes for 20 years so don't start getting all expert on me
My brand new ZZR began to rust on its downpipes before it was even run in properly, and yes I did look after it.
My Dads GPZ500S was the same.
All the Kawasakis I have owned personally or in my bike school had crap exhausts.
I didn't have to wash my Triumph every time I took it out, I was siimply saying that my owners manual advised it.

I haven't seen the OPs bike so I don't actually know how bad it is, but some bike exhausts can go rusty very quickly even if you do look after them, I wou;dn't have wanted to see what they would have looked like if I hadn't - especially near the coast

I take your point, but I have made no more than 7 trips on the bike, and it has always been covered at home. As a new rider I didn't take it out in the rain as I was concerned about whether I could handle the slippery conditions. This is why the bike hasn't been taken out since October. And to be honest, the bike had been left covered from October until the beginning of January. It was during this time that everything began to rust. All nuts and bolts, the stand, the exhaust, the wheels. I honestly don't think anything other than keeping the bike indoors would have helped.

Also, at the train station where I did keep my bike locked up I see a number of other bikes, some which are ten years old. None of these are covered and none show any signs of rust.

A bike that hasn't even reached 80km on the clock, and only four months old should still be looking brand new, but the thing won't even start anymore.
