Being Chased for a MasterCard debt from 2001

For the last couple of weeks I've had letters from Rockwell Debt Collection Agency saying I owe over £1000 to them for a debt originating at Royal Bank of Scotland, who I've never been with so I ignored but I rang them today and they say the original debt was a natwest mastercard in 2001 - but then later he said it was HSBC so I'm confused!
Now I most likely did get a CC 10 years ago but i'd imagine it was £250-£500 maximum not over £1000 and this is the first I've heard from it so I suppose I'm asking if I can wriggle out of paying this or if not what sort of offer could I make?
I don't work, I'm a full time carer for my child, i don't have a lump sum to pay it off at the moment.
Hope you can help!
ETA: I don't know if I've put this in the right forum, so if it would be better placed elsewhere can you let me know?

It may have been 250 then, but you can be sure they've added LOTS of charges on since then to bump it up for you!0

If they say it was incurred in 2001 and there has been no contact between you and RBS and/or Rockwell in the last 6 years, then the debt is "statute barred" and is uncollectable.
It may be recorded on your credit file though, so that will not be good if you seek further credit in the future.
There are template letters in this forum for you to use to reply to Rockwell reminding them of the rulings on statute barred debts. I'm sure someone who knows the link to them will be along shortly in case you can't find them yourself.0 -
Hi, contact your local citezens advice, they will give you all the information you need. They will tell you that the debt is now statute barred and is uninforcable providing you have not payed anything towards the debt in the last 6 years and have not acknowledged the debt in writting. Ring the company and tell them that the debt they are chasing it is statute barred and the debt is not inforceable, dont let them talk you into a settlement amount. They will tell you they have other ways to collect the debt but this is untrue, they just want to scare you into paying. These companies bulk buy debt that other companies have not been able to collect, they pay next to nothing for the debt on the basis that if 10 out of 100 people they chase pay, they will make money. I hope this helps.0
