Asda Santander Card

I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with Santander?

I know they get a bad press - being foolish I applied for one so I could get my shopping delivered for free (having very limited mobility it is something I rely on).

I set up a direct debit (and a BT) during the application process.

I was sent a PIN but no card. I called them to be told they had no such application... and no such BT ... yet I had a PIN!

The card arrived a few days later. Good to go, I thought.

First statement came, no mention of the DD so I paid online and set up another DD.

Second statement came, no mention of a DD so I paid online again.

Third statement time, I didn't see it online and missed the payment. So I have been stung with a late payment fee and interest now.

I contacted them and was told no DD had ever been set up on the account.

Are they really this imcompetent?

I know I should have been more alert to the statement and perhaps set up a SO to make the minimum but I didn't. I really didn't think they could get it so wrong.

I have now paid it off and will close the account.

  • Usually, when your online statement comes, if they have received instructions for the DD, then it will have been set up. They would tell you whether you needed a manual payment in case the DD wasn't set up on time. In your case, if on the second statement hadn't mentioned this a all then alarm bells should have been ringing. And if it is 100% online statements only, then you need a reminder in your diary or something. I doubt you can overturn their decision but ring them anyway!
  • See my Asda Ceredit Card thread posted earlier today - Have had major problems that have taken nearly 3 months to sort out - have now at least got £50 compensation for it all though - but had to keep on at them - am now cancelling card as have got a better deal elsewhere for myself.

System upgrade caused the problem their end - to my knowledge over 4000 complaints have been made to the ombudsman
