Poor old Mac my rescue male neutered Tom had 3 ladies to get used to, one after another, before he died at the grand old age of 15.
He used to spit .. sulk.. ignore us, but was always inquisitive when the new arrivals came here.
They sorted out their differences themselves but the new cats were always females
Also if any other Cat comes into their territory now days .. both my cats are out of the cat flap like a bullitt and suddenly are the best of friends defending their territory

This thread is really interesting for me.

I have a 4yo male cat and really want to get another as I think it might be good for him to have company. I've seen a younger female cat and I'm umming and aahhing. He's quite a solitary cat and seems happy enough on his own until I'm out for a while then he sits in the window waiting for me to get home, obviously a bit bored with his own company.

From the posts it seems that cats eventually make room for each other even if they are not close. Hmmm what to do...

Carter, this is why i got a new kitten. Im out the house for about 9 hours a day so thought Tilly (older cat) would like some company. I feel alot more positive after posting this, its just going to take a bit of time.

Although last night Tilly tried to pounce for the new kitten a couple of times when I was out of the room.

I also thought I was imagining things..... I was sure the new kitten was hissing at Tilly too but never saw her doing it face on.... the OH saw her doing it last night. Seems we have an 8 week old hard case on our hands!!

Im trying to have then both in the living room although we cant let them both just wander as they both seem to like it under the sofa.... I think if Tilly cornered her under there the new kitten would be breakfast!!

Now Tilly is tolerating me holding the kitten while also stroking her. Big difference from day one already. :j Im just too nervous to let them both wander around freely!!!

Unfortunatly i have it the other way round. Kitten is now 9 months old and has turned on the older cat. No blood has been spilt yet and i guess she is only wanting to play but i dont think kitten holding on to the older cats neck with her mouth is playing.

    Hormones/puberty can do funny things.

The little one is feeling tougher now she's bigger. Either the big one will get fed up and slap her around the house a couple of times or will hand over top cat status to the usurper.

Again, it does settle. My youngest still does it to my old girl from time to time. Usually old girl sighs and wanders off (she would NEVER tolerate this from the boy cat she has grown up with, she'd scream like a banshee and try to murder him back) but occasionally when Sqeek gets a bit too lairy, Meep will beast her around downstairs. Normal service is then resumed.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

  • Once had a right madam of a cat, and got another. Madam did not like the Tom much, and had him cornered in the kitchen for a good week and a half, dabbing and pawing all the time.

Eventually new Tom made a dash for freedom, took one mighty swipe at madam and settled the score. Madam got the message.

My cats play together, sort of, I can never tell. They chase each other (both instigate it) and then they fight out in the hall, with one of them leaving in a sulk, but my male cat (neutered) is forever just walking up to the sleeping female (also done) and just starts biting her neck. Understandably, she gets pretty narked and FUR WILL FLY!
  • We are 2 and a half weeks into the same situation. There was some hissing at first towards the 2 new kittens but within a few days Scribble got curious. He now even plays with them a bit. We didn't try and keep them all apart, we just stayed calm and made a fuss of Scribble whenever he came into the living room and got close to them. He will also now tolerate them playing with his tail. He only tells them off when they get too rough!
So, don't worry - it'll be fine in the end

Last time I brought a new kitten in, I just let them get on with it... though when I went to collect the little one I used the other one's carrier and put one of his blankets in it so that the kitten would know his smell and some of it would rub off on her so that she wouldn't smell totally alien to my resident moggy. There were hissy fits all round the first day but by the 2nd they were quite happy to be in the same room as long as they couldn't see each other. By day 4 they were sharing a basket...
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail

    Hey Guys,

Things are much better already :j

Last night i left all the doors open for the first time overnight, i got up to them chasing each other round the house but it was more playful.

Tilly was on the recieving end of a swipe from the kitten the other day with a wee cut on her face but she seems to have moved on! haha!

So it seems they may well be friendly companions after all :T

Thanks for all the help and advice guys :D
