help regarding pc.....very slow!!!

Ok, im hoping someone can help me figure what the problem is. The pc at my office (the one i use!), has gone extremely slow....its bne like this for more than 8-9months now. havent been too bothered about it as i dont get round to using the pc alot but now its doing my head in. I have to wait like 3-4 mins for a page to open! Does anyone know why this may be happening and what can i do to fix it?

This could be down to a load of reasons..

I'll start with some suggestions, but really more info is needed.

The PC Spec: CPU Speed, Ram, age/make etc.
The operating system XP, Win2000 etc
Prior to 8-9 months was is fine?
What page do you refer (a web page?)
Does it have up-to-date virus / spyware software?
Is it conencted to a network?
Is it conencted to the interent via broadband?

Hubby does this to fix slow pc's

Clean off any virus's and spyware
Remove any A/V programmes that slow pc i.e Norton
Defrag the hard disk
Load anti spyware and anti virus products, he uses AVG which is free

He recommends that the security tools are used once a week.

He will also advise of any file sharing programmes that slow the pc and recommend a memory upgrade if it needs to have one.

If you want to get really down dirty you could delete the temp files from internet explorer.

Don't do this unless you know what your doing - set the paging file to 0, reboot, run check disk, defrag the hard disk then finally set the paging file back to automatic.

before 8-9 months, pc was fine and quite fast, It is Windows XP. Yes, i meant when i open a web page, it takes ages......

no, but it might help diagnosis, it tells you what's going on on the PC.
