mot failure (parking brake)

I took my Volvo S80 2.5T SE, 53 plate in for MOT today (71kmiles) , the current MOT expires on the 26th.

It failed on

"nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort"
"parking brake efficiency below requirements"

(which I guess is just one problem)

Not sure how much that will cost to fix

The car has a dented offside driver's front panel (parking scrape) and quite a few minor scratches due to bicycles and things, so it's not really presentable to go on a dealer's forecourt, but it's a good car (albeit thirsty), comfortable and with good performance.

It also is due its annual service.

We are going to buy a new (used) car tomorrow, just wondering how much I should ask in p/x, and failing that if I sell privately, I should get the parking brake fixed and the MOT test done.

Not many on autotrader, but here are a couple both at £3k

Not working on one side is almost certainly the linkage on the calliper.

Squirt some WD40 on it and work it back & fore is what works on my Audi and Iveco van which both need it doing every MOT

Cable or caliper, Dealer will be suspicious as you only have 6 days MOT left, They will be able to go
online and check the MOT fail points.

The brake shouldnt cost that much to fix, £120 or less?

be worth a bit more PX if it had a 12month MOT.

take rear tyre off get a wire brush and clean around the cable linkage, spray brake cleaner or wd40 on the linkage work it a few time back and forth does the jobby on vw golf mk4.

Even if your friendly, local independent garage took £100 to strip, clean and replace the brakes that sum will get you a fresh MOT, making it much more attractive as a trade in, much more valuable as a private sale, and you never know, as its the devil you know, might persuade you to save your cash and keep it for another year.

Fixing it will likely cost you a lot less than replacing it.

Well I've bought a new car (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201049374985401) The dealer offered £1500 in p/x for this one - I said no....

Here's the pics of the old car, just need to sell it privately I guess.

Any suggestions on how to sell? I'll get the MOT sorted obviously.

TBH those in the 53 plate year with that damage arent worth much undesireable for the engine size, £1500 px is about the price as it is.

judging by the pics of scrapes, thats about 250-500 quid fix done properly.

on the market as is private, ask £2250 but come down to about £1700 if you cant get rid.

I've had three replies to my autotrader advert:

Hello my name is Angela, i am interested in purchasing your precious property of yours listed on Craigslist.com, so do get back to me with your final asking price and its present condition....Thanks hope to read from you soon..

    Angela..

    Second:

Hello my name is Gorge Wilson i just went through your listed Car and to be sincere with you i really have so much interest in it...i will love to
buy it for my son. Hope is still up for sale?

    Best Regards.

Third one was slightly dodgy sounding, but not quite so blatant, so I replied to it:

    NAME: MR Timothy lahm
    TELEPHONE:
    EMAIL: t.lahm031@yahoo.co.uk

    Vehicle Details:
    MAKE: VOLVO
    MODEL: S80
    PRICE: £2250

    Message:
Is the vehicle still available for sale and what's your last asking price?

Reply comes back from him when I say he can have £100 off:

Am happy the vehicle is still available. However,Please i want to be convince this car is actually own by you and I hope all the papers document is fully complete and there is no outstanding payment ?Am sorry to ask this but i just want to be security conscious.
Am happy with price £2150 GBP and as for payment status am okay with a British Certified United Kingdom Bankers draft issue here in local bank in Great Britain ,which can be cashed liquid in any local Bank in United Kingdom and it would only take less than "two" working days for processing for your bank to get the cash ready to you my bank advised .Mind you i have no benefit of doubt that the payment MUST FULLY CONFIRM CLEARED before i can take full ownership of vehicle. However,As for the pick up arrangements have already make an arrangements with a private carrier company who is going to handle it professionally for me and also sign the papers document on my behalf after i must have make the full payment .Please let me have more pictures both in and out of the car because i would not be available to inspect the car at present due to my work schedule here in Carmethenshire Wales .
Honestly speaking am buying the car on behalf of my wife whom we just got married two weeks ago, she is from Edinburgh in Scotland, she is currently in Hamburg in Germany my native country. My wife she's in need of a car now in British design "RIGHT HAND DRIVE" due to work distance and also will be easier for her to drive in Germany.
Thanks and hopefully to hear from you today were by i can proceed with payment as soon as possible.
    Cheers
