Car Accident - Last day insurance
Just a car accident. As of this minute unsettled in terms of insurance but third party went into the side of me and he has said he will accept liabilty.
My issue is my insurance runs out tomorrow and was going to change companies tonight. What a scenario and what a time to have an accident.
Getting a courtesy car tomorrow. Asked them about insurance and they told me the policy will be a completly different policy and nothing to do with my own policy.
If i do not renew my policy for now as will not drive my own car until repaired/written off, will this be ok? do i still need a policy of my own to drive a courtesy car?
As the case would be classed as pending, i will have to pay a higher amount for renewal plus if the car gets written off, my policy will be of no use until i get another car.
Strange scenario. Please advise.

ooohhh good one. What policy are you driving the hire car on? Yours or the hire companies.
Is there a risk your car will be written off? Taking out insurance now could be costly, Declaring a fresh claim
and then change of details if you buy a new car.
Providing your covered on the hire companies insurance it may be worth waiting to see what is happening.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
If you move to a new insurance i'm sure they'd put a loading on any insurance, the way they'd see it was a crash claim pending.
A lot of people who hire cars don't have a vehicle of their own so the insurance must be sorted out some way with the rental company, you'd have to ask is a courtesy car similar.
I think in the circumstances you may be best sticking with your current insurance company, however they may put a loading on your next policy until the claim is sorted, which could be months, you'd have to ask them any additional premium they charged you would they refund it once the crash claim is sorted.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

If this is a third party hire company and they have confirmed that the hire car insurance isn't depending on you having your own car insured then just drive the hire car until the case is resolved.
This is actually going to save you money (vs having a crash at some other time) because the longer they drag their heels fixing your car, the more time you have not having to pay for insurance.0 -
As lum says. Make sure you take the hire car from the 3rd party insurance company though (and in fact process the whole claim through them), so you don't have to mess about with your current company who you're trying to leave. Your own current company need have nothing to do with the claim process.0

The same thing happened to me a few years ago. Last day of insurance and someone ran into me and my car was written off. Exisiting insurance company/3rd party insurance sorted the whole thing.
I didnt get a hire car in the end (once they realised my car was a write-off they wouldnt supply one) but they had already told me that the 3rd party insurance would cover itThe Daily Mail
