Renting a room as theatre digs

Hi,

My local theatre has a list of digs for visiting artists that you can join, they rent a room off you for a few days when they are performing in town.
Does anyone have any experience of this? Any pitfalls or problems?
I am assuming that the amount you can charge is quite small - £15-20 a night?
I live alone, by doing this would I have to give up my single person's discount on my rates? Also would it have any tax implications?

It would be good to make a bit off extra money on a casual basis.
Any advice gratefully recieved!

  • Look up the rent-a-room scheme for information on the tax implications of letting furnished accomodation in your main home.

Under the rent a room scheme you can pocket £4,500 before having to pay any tax on it.

  • Thanks for your answers.
Does anyone know if I'd no longer be entitled to the single persons discount on my council tax?
I'm particulally interested in this as, if I was only getting £15 a night for a few nights a month I wouldn't want this benefit wiped out by losing my discount!

youd have to speak to your local council tax dept

My personal feeling is that person wouldnt be LIVING there, they would have thier own home they live in and would be paying council tax on that. therefore anyone staying with you would be a visitor. Ie no tenancy agreement, no rights over the property, same as if a mate came to stay for the weekend. Ie if your mum came to stay for the w/e you wouldnt lose your CT perk as your mum isnt a perm resident, she has a home elsewhere.

Does that make sense, im just typing out loud there, of course I could be wrong
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

    i agree with Lynz
  • I agree with Lynz too re the council tax.

I think you'll find the limit under the rent a room scheme is £4,200 or £4,250, not £4,500 - but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Probably academic anyway in your case.

I used to know someone who did this - he did a bit of a double-take when Matt Lucas turned up to stay one night!
