This is the attitiude I really don;t get (where's a confused smilie when you need one ;) ).

You'd think bureau managers and Trustee Boards would use every method available to them to shout about the dreadful thing that's about to hit, but instead they appear to be too ashamed to mention that bureaux are about to lose a good number of highly skilled, highly motivated individuals, and that the bureaux themselves may close :(

  • Just picked up on this - am absolutely disgusted at the idea of cutbacks in CAB. I thought one of the ideas behind the cuts in public sector was to involve more local / volutary / charity groups in providing services.

Will be e-mailing my MP about this, not sure if I'll get a reply as we've a new MP (old MP always answered letters).

    From this article:
A city council spokesman said the council's Conservative/Lib Dem coalition cabinet had always made it clear that funding was not guaranteed beyond any single year, up to a maximum of three years.
"It was never our intention for agencies to become dependent upon this source of funding, or that it form their sole source of income," he said.

Where exactly do councils suggest CAB get core funding from? Seeing as our LA often directs people to our office if they have issues with housing and council tax benefit, you'd think it would be in their interest to keep CABx open.

How often do you see an official letter that directs you to CAB if you need help. How much do they pay CAB for providing that service?

  • I believe the reasons for us not approaching the media involve wanting to remain impartial and non political... if we go criticising the government I suppose it could be seen as if getting involved politically where we've always refrained from it.

From what it seems if there have been leaks, it's been from people on the inside or the ones who've lost their jobs...

Every CAB is reliant on core funding, which is almost always from councils. If the councils take away the funding, the CAB dies, and that's pretty much it.

It needn;t be critical, though. It can be purely factual "due to funding coming to an end, Your CAB will be losing funding, and xxx debt workers". Then the public will do the "political" stuff, of writing to the media, MPs and Councillors.
