Im so upset to hear this newsI can't speak highly enough of the CAB and the work carried out there. Its terrible to hear that so many advisers will be facing job losses.
I worked as a volunteer in my local CAB last year and saw firsthand the kind of help and advice they give to many people, not just with debt issues but housing, employment, legal advice, welfare benefits, domestic abuse.....the list goes on!
The CAB was an absolute lifesaver for me and one of the main reasons I got through the mortgage rescue scheme and avoided repossession.
So sad0 -
CAB helped us through appalling time just over a year back when my wife's DLA was inexplicably stopped (was fully reinstated with their help) as well as holding my hand through BR.
This is dreadful news.“Procrastination is my middle name....well it would be if I could be ar**d to contact Deed Poll."0 -
What ever happened to that saying....`prevention is better than a cure`. I work in a very disadvantaged/ high poverty area & I am very alarmed indeed by the disbanding of the FIF.
Sadly I suspect the unscrupulous doorstep lenders will be rubbing their hands together in glee by this news:(0 -
On Friday I rang Cit Ad (our national organisation), I rang the press office to ask what media releases were to take place since the announcement by Mark Hoban MP. I was put through to the head of FIF, which went to voicemail. I left my details for a return call - non received. I then rang Mark Hobans office to question the decision. I was put through to the treasury who promised to ring me back - did they?
Its ok for Cit Ad to ask those within the service to " please join us in raising political awareness of the impact........" join them in what?
Our organisation will get nothing from appeasing this government with waffle like "we're talking to the minister......" We need to get up and fight, in the media, on national tv and press as well as local press throughout the land.
On Monday i'm going to contact Cit Ad again and ask them what is it we are joining them in? I'm going to ask them if they are going to show a fighting spirit that individual bureaux show every day?
I would urge every FIF worker and their collegues to bombard Cit Ad on Monday by phone or e-mail demanding a mass media battle.

Should have done it before,
but just PM'd Martin to see if he can do anything to raise media awareness?

Thanks Fermi, you're probably right in it being too late - but I can't bear not to try!
If Martin did something in the media, and Cit AD, and Unite and other unions, and the Labour party did the same who knows what MIGHT happen.

I didn't actually believe they would be so monumentally short sited and stupid enough to do this?
I'm normally fairly non-political as well, but this is just shameful.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

As a realist I understand there needs to be cuts but I have to say I'm with you guys on this one.
Its an essential service that some of you carry out and that needs to be funded.0 -
Dreadful news.
The CAB were the biggest help for me by far in my long struggle. I wish i'd been to see them earlier.
Sounds like others wont be able to get the oppotunity that I had0 -
This is terrible news, with all of the cut backs in benefits and so many people facing redundancy there will be a greater need for this service than before. Combined with the other cuts that CABs are facing I am worried that it won't be long before they have gone altogether and people won't have anywhere to turn.0
