Custard Powder

Over the past year the cost of custard powder seems to have gone mad. You could get supermarket own brand tubs at reasonable prices but they all seem to have disappeared. Our local supermarket has recently stopped its own brand and now only sells Birds at £1.10 a tub!

So can anyone suggest any shop or supermarket which still stocks own brand at reasonable prices?

Thanks.

i still find the powder to be cheaper than tins and so much nicer than the add water packets....i paid about £1 for a birds tub in home bargains
    onwards and upwards
  • Thanks for the information, haven't spotted it as don't regularly shop at Tesco.

I agree with you that powder makes much better tasting custard with either semi-skimmed or full cream milk than any of pre-made stuff in tins.

I seem to remember that Lidl (I think) once had their own with a slightly almond flavour which was nice for a change, but I haven't seen it for a long time. Anybody else seen or tried it?

I've used the Tesco powder and its as good as Birds.
300 grmas Tesco powder 69p while Birds is 97p.
There is a Tesco Value pack of 70g for only 6p - not tried but worth a try for that price! (although Tesco Value jelly was rubbish).

I agree that Tesco Value custard powder is good.
If you find some cheap cornflour you could make your own custard powder like my nan used to, And her nan actually!! She prefered it to Birds but I haven't tried it myself. You make it up same way as custard powder, but substitute an equal quantity of cornflour for Birds powder, and then add vanilla flavoring to taste once its cooked. Probably wouldn't look a nice yellow though!:)

I used a couple of packets of the value custard powder for the Christmas trifle and it was lovely :)

The packet stuff for 6 p is fine. I buy their swiss roll for 20 odd pence and then buy the packet stuff for 6 p and makes a great dessert for the kids.

  • :( We're visiting friends and went into their local Tesco superstore this evening to stock up before going home. Unfortunately they only had Birds and there was no room or labels on the shelves for any other brands. They did have foil packs of 'instant' custard mix but the less said about those the better.

Also there were shelves of many different brands of tinned and Tetra packs of factory made custard. It's so frustrating.

Does this mean that down here in Somerset they don't appreciate the nicer taste of 'make it yourself' custard? Maybe it's thought too difficult, although I've burned pre-made out of a tin but always had perfect results with powder and real milk.

Your advice please. Do you think that this is just a local problem or should I go on looking?

Sainsbury's basic at 12p is brilliant, especially on top of Fairtrade chocolate sauce pudding.
