online storage

Someone's asked me about online storage. If anybody has any recommendations.

He has a lot of large videos (up to 80mb each roughly) which he takes and he wants to upload them with password protection so a.n. other can download them.

In case you think this is some sort of seedy pastime, it's actually to do with insurance claims, so the video can't be optimised or anything that will degrade the quality of the footage.

Thought about ftp accounts under a domain name, but the procedures involved all seem reasonably complicated - ok for the downloader, a bit confusing for the setter-upper/uploader.

Anybody got any experience of any of these?

I use spideroak. You get 2Gb free and the files are encrypted so only people with the password can access them (even spideroak employees can't see your data)

You can create / share folders and protect them with passwords.

You can buy additional 100Gb blocks for $100 (£63) a year

Unlimited machines can be attached to a single account.

The software can be a bit slow (it encrypts the data before sending it which takes a while for large files)
But I find it's easy to use.

  • What about Dropbox? 2GB free, and they have plans for additional storage. Only people you invite can view your folders, and you can create folders to automatically share files with different people. My family and I use it a lot for sharing photos and videos with each other.

Drop Box is popular though I never use it.

I get both MobileMe (max upload 1gb per file) and LiveDrive (unlimited storage and backup space) free due to my work and I honestly say I can't fault them. I like using ME for the occasional transfer, or if i have to share as i can password protect links and also set it to expire after a certain timeframe. But I use LiveDrive as my main storage (itune library on there)

Microsoft Live Skydrive. 25GB free. You can create password protected folders, limit access by user ID or have public ones.

    Dropbox seems easiest to use.
Adrive seems very difficult to use.
Youtube lets you upload the full videos but it takes forever (twice as along as Dropbox)
Skydrive requires you to be part of that Godawful Microsoft Live rubbish.

They all require the "receiver" to sign up for an account with them (don't mind it for the sender, that makes sense).

    The search continues.
  • There's literally hundreds of file hosts you could use. I would say one of the biggest names that doesn't demand premium accounts or spam people with ads is Media-Fire. Incredibly easy to use. Simple register an account. Click, browse and upload. It has a file manager, unlimited storage, unlimited uploads, can password protect files, private links (the file is only accessible to people who have been given the private link) and best of all free unlimited parallel downloads for users.

So for example if you upload three videos and want somebody to download those three videos, they can do it all at once at a good download speed with no wait times or ads spamming them. It's reliable too, in the past three years Ive been using it. Never once has the website been down.
