Dell laptop stopped working

Hi

My niece got a Dell Inspirion for Christmas 2009 which has stopped working even when plugged into the mains via the adaptor. She said before it turned off it said the battery was coming to the end of its life! Is this right and to be expected after only 12 months? Can they only be bought from Dell or can you get them elsewhere?

It is more then likely that the Charger has died
Even when the battery has given up the ghost the laptop will still turn on if plugged in
Do you get no lights or power?

No, no lights or anything. We wondered whether it was the charger rather than the battery.

Quick way to test for certain, flip laptop over and remove the battery and plug in to the mains.

But from what you've said its the PSU thats died. If its a dell you need a official dell PSU, any other and the battery will refuse to charge.
Go Here and double check the laptop is outside of dell's warranty, if its still got days to go then phone dell and they will post out a replacement, if it reports 0 days left then you can typically buy the PSU from Dell's website for about £40ish.

had both batteries AND Power supplies fail quick quickly on Dell Laptops, gota 3 year old one thats on its 3rd power supply and its just over 3 years old

Thanks for the replies. Typically its outside the warranty! I'll order one from Dell for them.

Now I'm scared, I'm using a Dell Inspiron and it'll be a year on June! I hope this won't die on me too!
