Claiming ESA - partner about to start work- ADVICE?

Hi,

I;ve been claiming esa for a few months due to ill health and taking so much oxycontin i am unable and will be unable to work for some time.

I was not living with my partner until he was made redundant and it was wiser all round he moved in with me and joined my esa claim rather than him claiming jsa.

however he has been active in his job searchs and wants to work and has now been offered a temporary to perminate job, however it means he will only bringing home around £790 a month, he has children from a previous relationship which he has paid via the csa but now comes from my claim and also debts, i also have debts that have to be paid etc, so i just wanted to check before he accepts this job offer how this would affect us in the long run, as i will not be able to contribute work wise for several months would all esa stop?, i have tried contacting the esa but for some reason i got pulled from one operator to another who didn't have an answer for me.. thank you in advance.

  • debts aren`t taken into consideration as far as benefits are concerned, are you claiming icome based or contribution based esa?
  • i'm not sure, i got cancer about 3 years ago but it just keeps coming back i've been on esa for around a year this year, so i'll assume its income or at least it will be very soon?

if you hadn't worked in the previous 2 tax years prior to your claim for ESA, you can be pretty sure it's income based.
if it is you will lose your ESA and your partner will be expecyed to keep you.
if he works 30+ hours aweek yhe would be able to clain tax credits, as long as he is over 25.
    also you may get hb/ctb.
if you have care/mobility needs youalso may be able to claim DLA.
