Unemployed for 6 months, Self-Employment

Just wondering if anyone can help me here.

I have been unemployed for approx 5 months and am going self-employed soon.

Anyway an advisor at the job centre a few months ago told me that since I’ve been out of work for 13 weeks I can get £50 a week for 4 months when I do become self-employed.

Anyway now I am just about ready to start working for myself but spoke to someone else in the job centre today and they told me if I hold off signing off until February 11th (will be unemployed for 6 months then) I can receive additional benefits and reduced taxes or paying none at all (I didn’t get everything she said to me) anyway I’ve been browsing around the net and cannot find any benefit linked with self-employment and being unemployed for 6 months.

Does anyone who knows about these things know what it is and what extra benefits you can get being self-employed after 6 months being unemployed?

Thanks a lot.

As far as I know the £50 is only payable if you are out of work 6 months so just start preparing the business plan now and sign off on the 11th Feb. I wouldn't want to see you sign off now on the promise of £50 and may or may not get it if all you have to do is wait a few weeks. You'll get reduced NI contributions for a period of time as well you need to speak to HMRC when you register self employed.

When you eventually register as Self Employed with the HMRC (certainly follow the advice of the jobcentre and sign off in February) then you can apply for working tax credits and a class 2 NI exemption if you are on low income.

    Yeah that's what i found,

Still would be nice to know what this 6 months thing is and what i can claim. The advisor told me about the 13 weeks thing (the above) but the woman who you see when you sign on told me about the 6 months thing, she also asked one of her colleagues who also confirmed, be nice to know what it is they are talking about or if they have got it completely wrong.
