Engagement and Wedding Ring Valuations

My friend was wondering if anyone could help with the following:

Engagement and Wedding Ring Valuations

They were handmade in Hatton Garden, by Fenmor Arts. And the insurance valuation is dated 28th Jan 1989. The description is –
18ct Gold Handmade Diamond Engagement Ring containing 1.25ct of Rose Cut Diamond - £2,000.
18ct Gold Handmade Wedding ring - £200.
They are both slightly pyramid shaped when worn, with the diamonds a band of 5 in a row.
If this was their value in 1989, what would their insurance or sale value be now, so that we get a good guide for selling. And, can anyone recommend who pays the most for these kind of items?

Comments

  • Take them to a couple of reputable high street jewellers and ask them for a valuation. Anything anyone tells you on an internet forum who hasn't seen the items and is not an expert in the field would be less than worthless.
  • OP also be aware that these are valuations for insurance purposes (ie how much it would cost to replace these identically and new if lost or stolen)

the price you are likely to recieve for them will be much lower - they are second hand and are likely to sell for the cost of the gold + cost of the stones

the valuation you posted doesnt state the colour or clarity of the stones, and i believe rose-cut is no longer in vogue!

(try a few jewellers who deal in second hand jewellery and get a range of prices from different people

i would not recommend selling jewellery via ebay, i sold a £1k ring for £150! things are only worth as much as people are willing to pay for them, and they may well be 'worth more' when broken down as scrap

    g'luck!
  • Secondhand jewellery is a minefield, you need to go to a reputable jeweller or dealer to get the best advice.

18 carat gold was worth £18.00 a gram before Christmas - I sold two plain rings, one was 3 grammes and one was 4 grammes - I weighed them on digital kitchen scales. This was scrap value, although the rings were wearable, I didn't want them.

22 carat was £22.oo a gram, 14 carat was £14.00 a gram and 9 carat was £9.00 a gram. You can check the latest prices online.
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

About a few months ago i recently sold a white gold diamond solitaire to a jeweller for £350...i paid £1600 not 5 years ago and in all honesty i got more than i was expecting for the ring after being offered £110 from another jeweller.

I just sold a broken ring with Tesco gold exchange. as a promotional opening deal they are offering £10 for 9ct and £20 for £18ct. I had an old broken ring in my jewellery box and got £250 for it plus clubcard points. I sound like one of those cheesey adverts but I was really impressed. Offer finishes on the 31st Jan so I'd hurry!

Definitely go to a high street jeweller, a local jeweller gave me far more than the price/gram for a gold necklace. Well pleased!
She also valued my ring, both what I could sell it for and replacement value.
