Changing name by deed poll question

Could anyone who has changed their name in the past by deed poll give me a rough idea of how many legal copies of the name change document I might need please?

This is the document that states your change of name is legal and you would normally send to passport office/DVLA etc..

I figured I could go in to the branch of my bank and show them the document rather than send off?

You have to pay for legal copies so I am trying to get a rough idea of how many I might need.

Would be grateful if anybody could help

Thanks :)

Well I personally haven't done it but a close friend of mine did and they never had any copies at all, just sent it off to people one at a time. It depends how quickly you need to get it done.
The deed poll service says that if you order copies alongside the original they will send you a minimum of two copies, cost of £13 fee and £1 per copy....

  • I changed my name by Deed Poll almost a year ago. I did it online and ordered 6 legal copies. I found that places that i went to in person with my original copy were happy to photocopy it, and people who i needed to send legal copies to through the post always sent it back if i enclosed an s.a.e.

    Hope this helps
  • Thanks for the responses - I think I will go for 5 copies which is a fixed price.

There are so many different deed poll services available it's hard to know which to use! :o

I changed mine about 15mths ago and never bothered to ge a legal copy at all. It took a little while to get around everywhere but that wasn't a big deal, and I haven't bothered to change my passport as I can't see when I will need it again so will wait until I do so I get the full 10years!

I changed my name 4 years ago. My solicitor was really good with the paperwork though as I got charged for the original document and then they copied this and certified them without charging me.

Any bank/savings accounts I took the document in. I changed my passport and driving license back to my maiden name. Think I had to send it off to update my pension and a couple of insurances. Really cant remember as I had so much other stuff on my mind at the time.

I changed mine in 1992 so this may be a bit out of date .. sorry if it is
I was told that you can choose to be known by any name you wish as long as you notify people.
I did do it through a solicitor just to make it official but just photo copied the bit of paper.
It was a bit confusing at the wedding though . Bride and groom with the same name ;)

    Hello galvanizersbaby

I changed my name in 2009 and got 4 or 5 legal copies which worked out right for me.

If it's of any help, I used a company called "UK Deed Poll Service" http://www.deedpoll.org.uk/ who provided a very quick and efficient service.
  • Should have added in my other post that i used The Legal Deed Poll Service, very quick and easy to do, and not pricey either. The papers arrived within a couple of days, and the only people i contacted who wanted to see copies were those who i had credit accounts with (Next directory/QVC/O2). Surprisingly none of the utility companies did, neither did the council tax people! Ive done my driving licence (free unless you want a new photo) but like one of the previous posters have left my passport till it runs out, cant afford foreign holidays now anyway!!!!
  • I changed my name for free using the wording on the attached site, I just added my personal information, printed out 5 copies on nice paper and added a legal seal, I got them from Staples, I think they were about £2.50 for 20. Then you just need to sign it and get two witnesses to sign it too.

I've sent it off to my bank, credit card company, Inland Revenue etc and they've all accepted it without any problems at all.

  • Changed my name back in 1996 through solicitor, she gave me 10 signed copies plus the origional. All I have today is the origional :D so I photocopy it if I have to send it off, have had no complaints doing it this way. By the way, it's not me that has lost them its the companies failing to send them back over the years.
