Cost of replacement brake pads to BMW 1 series 2006

Hello, I bought a 2006 BMW 1 series last year and it is due to have its first MOT and service this weekend. For a few weeks the dashboard has been displaying a symbol which, when I've looked it up in the manual, indicates that the brake pads may need replacing. I know very little about cars and am worried about getting over-charged by the garage. Can anyone please let me know how much I should expect to pay for parts and labour on replacement brake pads if the pads do need to be replaced?

normal garage probably £50 - £70 BMW garage then £££££££££££££££££££££££££££££

It isn't the cost of the parts as the pads are quite cheap, but labour rates at a BMW garage will be around the £130 per hour mark. If you are taking it to a BMW dealer, the good news is that they have a scheme (four plus) for cars 4 years and older. This gives you something like a 25% discount on labour, and 10% on parts.

Don't forget to phone around, as dealers may have different labour rates.

As above though, a non franchised garage will be much cheaper (although I'd expect the bill to be closer to £100).

If you've been driving around with the light on for a few weeks, I would suggest you might want to get them checked and replaced in the very near future, otherwise you might end up getting discs as well!

Thanks very much for the advice. I'm not taking it to the BMW garage - way too expensive! I'm going to a local place that's in the good garage scheme. Fingers crossed I don't have to spend loads of money - am having a very broke month this month! Thanks again

You may find out that because you've ignored the warning light that you end up needing new brake discs as well - that'll add another £150-£250 onto the bill.

The warning light usually comes on at about 5mm so you shouldn't be down to metal just yet. You will need to buy another break pad sensor though which are about £10-£15 from BMW.

I'd ask about the 4+ scheme for the car. Fixed price servicing and repairs are quite handy if the car has FBMWSH. Alternatively your local, friendly independent garage will sort you out very cheaply, its not a complicated piece of work.

Find out if the car has the Service Inclusive Package, then ask which level as some of them ocver brake work FOC.
