MFC5840CN displaying "replace ink" on new cartridge

Hi

Wonder if anyone has come across this? I replaced my old cartridges with a new set - genuine Brother branded ordered from "Free Ink Shop" on Amazon - linky.

I print infrequently and haven't printed since replacing the cartridges over a month ago. The printer is now showing "Ink empty magenta. Replace ink". I've taken the cartridge out and checked. definitely ink there.

When I replace the cartridge, the printer asks if I replaced Cyan. I selected Yes, now it's displaying "No cartridge. Open scanner cover, then reinstall ink cartridge.".

I wonder if I haven't actually got genuine cartridges? A 10-second powering off as suggested by the Brother FAQ online hasn't helped either. Any ideas?
