i still think that is also very wrong.

its not what they asked for, they asked for a laptop, not a tablet pc. two completely different things with different users in mind wanting different results.

    Point taken.

Why not try a netbook? You can get some half decent ones for around £200 sometimes even less.

A netbook is not a laptop either, two completely different things with different users in mind wanting different results.

It's just a smaller laptop, called a netbook because its mainly for surfing the net.

Yeah you could be right though as they normally don't have a disk drive, but thats about it really.

cheapest ipad is still dearer than a decent proper big screened laptop though.

but as i said already, i think ipads are great! and i myself do want one at some point, so i hope people don't think im deliberately trying to put them down, thats not my objective.

For what I do a netbook would probably have sufficed (providing I had external storage for iTunes & photos) but my eyes aren't what they used to be and I wanted a bigger screen!

Whatever you do don't buy a dell, they use to be a good make but have went rapidly downhill over the past few years. I have had two inspirons, one a work laptop, the other a home laptop. The Power Supply has needed replaced several times and parts break easily on both machines.
  • I'll move this thread over to the techie board now to see if we can get you some more advice :)

Whiskeygalore - what's your budget? If you'd really prefer "a good value for money laptop" have a look at the sub-£350 laptop thread...https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1147017

Or here's a cheap and cheerful one for under £300

Unbelievable. Not one suggestion that they should get a new battery. I thought this was supposed to be moneysavingexpert.com not letswastethreehundredquidneedlessly.com.

How old is the laptop? If its under 5 years old, I'd buy a new battery. You can get a battery off Ebay for under £40 for nearly any laptop.

  • I would like to thank all for the great advice i went and looked at notebooks etc but my wife would prefer to stay with a laptop,as regards the battery the technician in Ballyclare told me the battery is completely dead and the laptop will only run on mains, the slightest movement of the mains lead it cuts off because of the dead battery ,he told me it is not worth buying a new battery as it could be the motherboard to blame not charging the battery, I have already bought a new charger and got a new jack installed. The laptop a 5 year old Dell goes fine its just if the power supply is interrupted it stops and I get a cross wife, not pretty,

moving the power supply SHOULD NOT SHUT THE MACHINE DOWN you have a faulty power supply or a faulty dc jack socket on the laptop, if the plug is faulty on the power supply you can get a good replacement for about £25 but if the socket on the laptop is faulty ( is it loose ) then it is not worth doing on a 5 year old machine.

battery with a 12 month warranty would be about £55 depending on model it might even be a bit less.

1 thing with dell batterys the do suffer with internal contact problems 1 thing that works some times, if you take the battery out and bang it flat on a hard surface it does some times bring the thing back to life i have been sucsessfull on a couple doing this.
