question about reclaiming charges

I have just checked my account this morning and I have 5 charges at least of £38 each for unpaid direct debits. I know this is my fault but I lifted the money to live on and am in the process of contacting the companies concerned, what gets me is that all but one of the direct debits was for less than the £38 the bank charged me for not paying them, they have now sent me £240 further over my overdraft than I would have been, Is this the type of thing that is referred to that we can claim back of the bank or am I barking up the wrong tree completely?
Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
