Argos Faulty Laptop

Hi guys, have been following on here for a while and have just took the plunge to sign up as im having an issue with my laptop.
Basically I bought a laptop just over a year ago from argos. The wireless adapter has recently in the past 3 months got faulty it is an intermittent problem and can disconnect and it can't reset in windows it has to restart for it to work.
I ideally wanted a straight replacement as im writing my dissertation at university at the moment but the technical support said unfortunatly it had to be sent off, which was fair enough.
Im a bit of a computer geek and doing a computing degree, I like to think I know what im going on about. I explained to the tech support the problem and that I had tried to update the drives which didn't solve my problem and even did a fresh format and reinstall of windows with still no success, therefore it must be a hardware fault. He agreed and logged the issue and what I had tried.
He advised me to bring the laptop in on the 4th of january to be sent off. I took it to my local argos store and the young lad was fine and said it will be around 12 days, anyway today, I recieved a call saying it had been returned.
I went down to collect it. I got it to my car, switched it on and the same problem, a little red cross in the wireless adapter box. After restarting it worked and then went off. I went back into the store and spoke to the lad and he said he would get the sheet they returned with the laptop. The sheet said "Reinstalled Drivers" which is exactly what I did and told the tech support guy on the phone what I did and it didnt work. I even created a folder on the desktop which a document saying what I had tried and even took a screen shot of the problem.
He said he would then speak to his manager. He came back and said his manager was quite good at IT and it was because there were no networks available. I said this is not the case, the wireless adapater has a red cross in it which means its actually not detected, it should have an "orange" star in to say the wireless adapter is detected but not currently connected to a network.
As i said that it started working, I said to him ill take it home and if it does this again im bringing it back tomorrrow. He said that was fine and he will ring them directly if it does it again.
Anyway guess what... it has been doing it tonight, I have took a screen shot of the desktop so I can show the manager tomorrow.
Anyway where do I stand legally? I mean I have given them a reasonable time to repair the laptop which they didn't do... I can't wait another 15 days for it to come back so that is not happening.
Im sure my model is discountined not so I either want an equivilent specification laptop or a better one or a refund.
Just wondered what anyone else would do, thanks in advance!

What I'd do is probably cut my losses and buy a new wireless card and fit it myself. If I was that desperate to have it for work, and avoiding any fuss and arguments, it would be worth the £10-odd to have it sorted quickly.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

You said it broke 3 months ago? Do you have any proof of that? (A screenshot of a red cross wouldn't be sufficient proof clearly, also what OS is this?) Might be problematic as it would be treated as broken from the time you brought it in, outside of the 1 year store warranty, usually I would treat these things as outside of the 1 year period without evidence.0

Sounds like Windows 7 to me?
And the red cross doesn't mean your wireless adapter isn't recognised, it means that you are not connected to any networks, that's all.
Have you upgraded the OS at all?
Did you try rolling back drivers?
Have you checked the advanced settings of your wireless adapter (they can be quite hidden away).0 -

I'd possibly agree...if it's a plug in wireless card then it might just save you a whole lot of timewasting being without it for another couple of weeks only to find they're reinstalled WIndows or something daft!
As it's over a year old did you buy an extended warranty on it as they usually have 1 year warranty?

Wrong, If it wasn't connected to any networks it would show a golden star.

Only if there are networks available (on windows 7).
I've been working with computers and setting up wireless networks for longer than I can remember and having a red cross does not mean your wireless network adapter is not recognised/broken as the OP claims. If that were the case then every single laptop I've ever owned has had a "broken" wireless network adapter, which I know is not true.
If you're on any other OS than 7 then a red cross can easily be remedied by right clicking and choosing repair. Unfortunately, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom have decided to get rid of this option (certainly in the 2 versions of Windows 7 which I've used).
You often see the red cross prior to the computer having acquired an IP address from the router.0
