40th Birthday Party...what did you do?

Hello all,

Its my 40th birthday in the summer and have been umming and arring about how to celebrate. I thought I'd ask the experts (!), so please let me know if you've celebrated in an unusual way, or if someone else has?

I like the idea of a party, but the thought also scares me and feel I might also end up spending most of my time in the kitchen! Same if we hired somewhere for the weekend and invited a load of people...

Hmmmm....please help!!!

Thank you

Sorry don't know if this is much help but I went to one where they hired a room and did a buffet, it was also fancy dress. Everyone seemed to have a good time
  • My other half took me on a cruise for my 40th. I spent the day on a beach in Sardinia, just perfect. When I came home I had arranged a girlie meal at our local tapas bar. There was around 15 of us. It was lovely, I arrived and they had put up balloons and decorated out table which made it really special even though it was a girlie get together rather than a party for my birthday. I had the people there I wanted and because it wasn't a "birthday party" I didn't have to invited people I should invited but not want there.

  • I am in the process of arranging my 40th birthday party - can't trust OH to do it!!! I am hiring somewhere and having a buffet and an 80's fancy dress theme :)
  • Limo to races for girly day out would be good.

    Living and loving it :)
  • Its my 30th party next weekend, Im having an 80s theme aswell. For the invitations I bought loads of 9inch records from a charity shop for really cheap then created the invitation bit on the computer and printed on a large sticky label then stuck it on the record and got some square envelopes off ebay. Everyone loved them they look great. Then I bought loads of glow sticks from poundland (20 for a £1) and some illoom balloons, they glow inthe dark, then bought some big records to go on the tables..of course its 80s fancy dress aswell. Family and friends helping with the food, trying to do as much 80s stuff as we can think off eg pots of prawns and crabsticks and cockles (like you used to get the fishman come round the pubs lol) oh and wagon wheels, snowballs, teacakes, flumps, flying saucers, etc etc. Cant wait :)

I hired a local cricket club, with a bar and a DJ. Food was cheeseboards and french bread (pickle etc.) so very easy to do. Everyone got a glass of sparkly on arrival and then bought their own drinks at the bar (cheap as it was club rather than pub prices).

The theme was 'Stars of the Stage and Screen' and I was Marilyn Monroe :T. We got some decorations of clapperboards, screen scenes online, had a red carpet at the entrance with a friend as the 'papparazzi' when everyone arrived so had a photo of every guest in costume and I handed out 'Oscars' (from a party shop online) to the best male and female costumes. I loved it :D

Hubby and I had a joint party with a wig or hat theme .It was a superb night even if I do say so myself .this followed on from a Disco theme for our 30th and people are asking what we are doing for our 50th..

Well not quite 40, ( 11 yrs off for me) but for my hubbys 30th last yr we planned a big family meal. but in the end all he wanted was a smaller family meal.

    the cruise idea sounds fantastic.

no idea what i'd like for my 40th, my dd will be 18 so i'm sure she will come up with some plans for her old mum, lol.
