Can I Claim income support

I have recently split from my partner and I am now a single mum to 5 children, I am currently living in our house which is now for sale and my partner has moved out, I am a full time mum and I receive full child tax credits and child benefit, would I be entitled to claim income support or help with the mortgage til our house sells?

how old is your youngest child? is it a joint mortgage? Is your ex still paying the mortgage or just child support?
  • My youngest is 2, hes not paying the mortgage because he needs to pay rent on his flat and we haven't sorted any child support out as yet?

If your youngest child is under 7 yes you can claim Income support, if older you need to claim job seekers allowance. Your partner has a legal duty to pay child support either do that between yourself or via the child support agency.
    *SIGH*
    :D
  • Would it be possible for him to look after the kids some of the time so that you can go out and earn. As you have both split then it is up to both of you to provide financially for your children.
  • Thanks but He works full time so the only time I could work would be evenings and weekends, then I would miss out on quality time with our older children who are at school :(

    I don't think 2 year olds should be allowed a flat!:j

    I considered that joke too.

To the OP, yes you can claim Income Support, but you should look for a job too.

If its a joint mortgage you may not get all the interest paid, they do not help with capital payments.
If its in his name only you wont get any help at all so will be up to him to make the payments or face losing the house.
