0845 for the POLICE

  • One thing to think of is will this stop public spirited people contacting the police with information?

I for one have contacted the police about stray sheep on the roads, would I be happy to do this if I have to ring an 0845 number on my mobile?

  • Not every Police Force use 0845, some still have the good sense to use Georaphical Numbers.

Yes - our local police station's geographical number is 1 digit different to my home phone number.

People leave me messages asking for crime numbers etc (do the police use BT 1571 then??) , and I'm disturbed day and night by numpties that can't dial the fricking number right!

The force where I live changed to 0845 followed by easy to remember no. and one of the reasons was so everyone would know and get used to what number to ring.

I took 999 calls for years and most of them were not life and death then you had to give out the local number because the only reason they rang 999 was they did not know which number to ring.

It did work by reducing the number of none emg. 999 calls.

0845/0870 numbers don't help accessibility whenever any organisation I deal with starts touting one I always demand the geographic one on the basis that I might want to phone them from abroad. Never do of course but I'm paying BT the fee for unlimited calls which doesnt cover 0845 & 0870
    They actually deter accessibility,my point.

Maybe Martin should take this up in one of his public appearances, might shame them into change.

  • I'm sure there is an article somewhere on non-geographical numbers

MSE Martin has an article on Non-geographical Numbers (ie stealth premium rate numbers) here.

We should be glad that police forces haven't chose an 0870 as some other government departments use purely to make money from those calling them.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
