Tesco Maths

You go to Tesco and you see a 1 KG Seville oranges pack and you really want to have a go at making marmalade. The price says £3.00 per pack and it's equivalent price is £2.00 per kilo. How much should you pay?

I didn't know either so today I took it with the price label to customer services and asked them. They scratched their head, did a price check on the computer, weighed them (0.95 kg), asked someone else. I helpfully said that £2 per pack was reasonable but £3 was 50% more. They frowned and said that they would charge me £2.00 which I accepted.

This is is the second time I have come across this muddled maths at Tesco. The other time the item was priced in my favor and to save the staff the headache of trying to work it out, I just picked up all the product and bagged myself a bargain.

I know its not quiet the same thing but I noticed recently their multi-pack items make no sense price wise either...Tesco light choices beans individually 37p or multipack of 4 £1.74...so its cheaper to get them seperately

I hope you mean stores and not employees when you say that. We don't get to pick and choose the labels which go out or price them.

Someone employed by Tesco must choose the price and make up the tickets to be printed by the stores. Or do they just pop out onto the street and ask a passing member of the public to pick a price for their goods?

Their equivalent price by weight can sometimes be seriously out.

It is an offence to display a false or misleading price indication, so if the displayed price is £2.00 per kilo I'd hold out for that too.

Or take it to customer services for double the difference!

If you want good maths, check this out at Sainsbury's online:

Estrella Damm Daura - Gluten Free Beer 500ml

    £7.10/unit
    £23.67/ltr

Presumably it's actually 330ml bottles, but even then the maths is wrong.

    Mind you, a nice bargain.

It's the same with their small tins of sweetcorn - multipack of 3 in my local Tesco store was £1.06 but single tins were 32p each, so 3 tins cost 96p - I always thought that multipacks were meant to be cheaper.....

Could be a 300ml bottle and then the maths is correct.

In our local Tesco they only sell them as 1.5kg bags, so the label was probably for that product and the wrong sized bag had either been delivered or put out in the incorrect space.
