On JSA and I have to pay for my own CRB to do work experience...

Right, I'm currently on JSA and have completed a part time teaching course that the Job Centre put me in touch with. Now I want to do the next step of the course yet to do so I need to (as a requirement of this next course) secure 'work experience' of 75+ a year of 'teaching.'

Now, after a lengthy search around I finally found a college that will let me attend one day a week. Yet they require that I should have had a CRB check or get one done. I've never had one before and the college requires me to pay them £36 pounds for this. They wont pay for it. I asked my JSA adviser; he was very vague about what to do. I am doing these courses towards getting a job; I'm also actively looking for work that I can fit around my studies and experience. I apply but hear NOTHING. I just cant afford to pay out for this check as I have no money. I could lend it yet I feel it's something that should be sorted out-I dont want any other poor sods EXPOITED. Anyone had this problem? Any advice?

It seems mean but ADF guidance changed recently and it can only be used towards moving barriers towards moving into employment. if your were needing CRB to start work then by spending that money you would sign off and start work. When they initially referred you they may have been able to pay but things change. The money spent will not involve you signing off. Sorry JCP staff don't right the rules.
  • As the college are doing you a favour by letting you get the experience I think it would be cheeky to ask them to cover the cost of your CRB.

    I highly disagree.

They want the check, they pay.

    Simple to me.

Why should someone on the breadline cough up?

Beats me why they pay travel expenses to interviews yet not this?

Not that CRB stop !!!!!philes coming into schools anyway...

  • But it isn't just a case of 'they want the check, they pay' - it is a mandatory requirement for working (and work experience) with young/vulnerable children/adults. Whilst clearly, it isn't a foolproof way to categorically protect those vulnerable children/adults from predatory individuals; we don't have many other alternatives, do we?

The only possible way round it that I can think of is that you join a school pta or other charitable organisation where you can be classed as a volunteer (rather than someone on 'work experience') and as it is a charitable organisation, they are not charged for CRB checks for volunteers - only problem being I am not sure that this will be an enhanced check, which the college may require.

Be aware also that CRB checks can take as long as 12 weeks to come through!

Unfortunately, even if you could get another group to pay for it, CRBs aren't transferable between organisations.
  • I administer the CRB checks for my company, which we do through an umbrella organisation. If you are working as a volunteer, that is the college are not paying you in any capacity, there is no charge for the actual physical CRB check, but there is a charge (the people we do this through charge £15) to cover the administration of the CRB check.

That's entirely up to the new employer and the level of potential risk.

You beat me to it, i had a CRB for volunteer work at a homeless shelter near me and i was asked to help out at the local YMCA but they needed a new check even though the one i had was only 2 months old.

I would imagine that a college would require a fresh CRB. On saying that in Scotland disclosures are usually transferable in the first 4 weeks (or at least they used to be).

if you are volunteering, there should be no charge apart from any admin fee.

however, if you are volunteering as part of a vocational course, you do have to pay.
