But it isn't just a case of 'they want the check, they pay' - it is a mandatory requirement for working (and work experience) with young/vulnerable children/adults. Whilst clearly, it isn't a foolproof way to categorically protect those vulnerable children/adults from predatory individuals; we don't have many other alternatives, do we?

The only possible way round it that I can think of is that you join a school pta or other charitable organisation where you can be classed as a volunteer (rather than someone on 'work experience') and as it is a charitable organisation, they are not charged for CRB checks for volunteers - only problem being I am not sure that this will be an enhanced check, which the college may require.

Be aware also that CRB checks can take as long as 12 weeks to come through!

Good idea in pratice, but not in theory, as if they got it done throu a PTA whilst its a CRB check, it is enchanced, but it will only be for the location that did the check. They can't be transfered across.
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx

£36 is cheap. Pretty much every new opportunity costs money. You'll be budgeting more than that each month for job seeking in the first place. Divert some of those funds for the CRB check.

The job centre and Shaw Trust will pay for the CRB, (I have just been through this myself) you have to cough up the money upfront (via the organization). Then prove to the job centre that you have paid and that it's a ligitimate CRB. I had to show a letter from my employer that I had paid for the CRB.

I have had to wait 12 weeks for my CRB to come through.

They kept umming and arring over paying, saying funds were low but in the end I got my £36.

My sympathies letsorthis, CRB is badly thought out and potentially very unfair. The sooner it is changed the better. It's also point of principle for me. You shouldn't have to prove that you haven't done anything wrong. What does that make people who haven't been checked, potential abusers? not quite innocent? presumed guilty?
  • The current system is not great, I agree. I teach in 2 different counties and have to have a CRB for each county - somewhat ludicrous!

    I highly disagree.

They want the check, they pay.

    Simple to me.

Why should someone on the breadline cough up?

Beats me why they pay travel expenses to interviews yet not this?

Not that CRB stop !!!!!philes coming into schools anyway...

I totally agree with this, the college should pay. However, are you being paid?

The reason I asked is if not & you are classed as a 'volunteer,' then the college gets the check FREE !

I know this as I volunteered to coach my sons school (secondary) team in football. I was able to, have badges etc. so why not?
