When to plant apple trees?
We bought a couple of cheap apple trees in November from Lidl, and then it snowed, then it froze and one way and another we still haven't planted them
They've been stored in the garage & still look ok, as far as I can tell, although I admit I don't know what I'm looking for!
Now that the ground has finally defrosted enough to get a spade into it, can we just plant them? Any tips or suggestions welcome!
It would be difficult to underestimate my gardening knowledge or competence
. OH has planted thousands of trees - but they were all Scots Pine back when he worked for the Forestry, so I don't know if that counts :rotfl:

Hi,
Yes it would be best to get the tree in the ground sooner rather than later.
Are there any instruction with the tree?0 -
Are they in pots or bare-rooted?If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

They are bare rooted. Is that good or bad??
Not sure about instructions - I'll check when I get home from work!0 -

rather depends.
What have you covered the roots with since you took them home?
If you have them under damop sacking and the garage was frost free, possibly OK.
if you have them in a bucket with a bit of soil, probably OK.
If you parked them up against the wall and left them there, chances are the roots have dried out and have been affected by the freeze as well.
Ideally, you needed to dig a hole in the ground, even a basic scrape, and cover the roots with soil.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
I'm glad Ras has asked these questions, Thanks Ras, I was going to come back to add abit more.
Do have a look at the instructions.
The tree will need a good soak, the roots I mean, before it planted. Its turned rather cold here now, not sure where you live.
Best not to plant in cold soil.0 -
