Curtains - rule of thumb?

Hi all, we are just about to start putting up curtains around our new house, is there a rule of thumb when buying curtains and hanging them with regards to how far past the window the poles go etc? We always seem to have trouble with this.
At them moment we have gone for 10" past the window each side for the poles, and 10" up from the window sill for the tie back bar. - it looks good, but would like some advice anyways
Thanks
