As it's working tax credits, I assume you are working and also get a salary paid into the account? I know there is something that they can't take charges out of 'benefits', but how would you prove to the bank that the charge would be from benefits and not from salary?

Might be best to bite the bullet this month, cut back on your weekly grocery shop and other expenditures (maybe make some lunches rather than paying expensive amounts for inferior school dinners) and get on track so that next month it doesn't happen again like it did this montha and last month.

The suggestion of two accounts sounds like a good one for you to look at!
  • i never knew they couldnt take money out of benefits - i have been left with nothing before when direct debits have gone out - my own fault of course

i would try opening another account for direct debit - that way your money is separate and should save them taking the money

Not all benefits but some can used by banks to pay charges but its the account holder thats wrong anyway, if someone cant handle a normal bank account there are simple bank accounts that cant be overdrawn.

Thanks for all replys. I think the biting the bullet idea is probably my best bet and now try to keep on track. i am normally very good with my account but had somewhat of a mini meltdown in the last few months what with my fathers passing, partner losing his job and trying to get christmas sorted. I KNOW i am to blame for the fault and no-one else and can usually handle a 'normal' bank account just fine. My float all dried up after my man lost his job as i was trying to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table.

They can take money from benefits once they reach your account, its only before that they cant make a charge against. Once they hit your account they are treated as income.
  • i run two accounts and it really solves alot of problems, al my wags go in to one, i deduct the amount all the dd come to and what is left gets transferred to my other account, then i know exactly how much i can spent and dont have any problems with spending my bill money. you should try it, if found it so much easier as i dont have to try and remember what i need to leave in the bank, just do it on the first of the month and thats it dont think about it again
