Is it possible to do this? I've got this cable but when I connect it to my phone and the HDMI port on the computer, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

What are you expecting to happen?
I know nothing about a Nokia N8, but I'm guessing you're connecting an HDMI ouput to an HDMI output, so I wouldn't be surprised if nothing happens in that situation.0 -
Ah. I clearly know nothing about HDMI! At least that's one piece of info I learned today - so clearly it isn't like USB then, where one port does both input and output?Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

I'm not much of an expert on HDMI - it does seem to have both input and output functions, but only for display control purposes. In your context, it's probably there so that you can display media content from the N8 on a bigger screen such as a TV or monitor.
If you want to transfer data to and from the phone, you'd be better off using USB or Bluetooth.0 -
I was only really wanting to use it to view my phone screen on my computer, but it says cable not connected. Is it not even possible to view this way? Since it doesn't seem to work I guess not, but I thought I'd check before I totally gave up on it!Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Does your computer monitor have a HDMI input? I would suspect that it doesn't. Plugging it into the PC is totally fruitless, it's the monitor it needs to be plugged into. As stated earlier in the thread, the idea is that you can play your high definition videos over a large screen LCD TV. I'm pretty sure that you can't just use it as an external mobile screen either, the HDMI port will only be utilised to display videos captured by the phone in HD and not as some sort of mega-sized phone screen.0

this bit is correctI'm pretty sure that you can't just use it as an external mobile screen either, the HDMI port will only be utilised to display videos captured by the phone in HD and not as some sort of mega-sized phone screen.
this bit is wrong, as you can use the TV as one big mobile display to view the internet, watch iplayer, play games ect, you can even pair a bluetooth mouse and keyboard to it so it is a bit like a computer
watch this (OP) on how HDMI works http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StMbqhgJyuI0
