What is it with Home Economics/Domestic Science and traycloths! I have never seen one in real life but the mention of them here reminded me that one of our projects was to embroider a traycloth. I was rubbish at it and I think my Mum might have done most of it for me.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

lol, our home ec as cooking but i knew more than she was teaching, i learnt to sew a button on watching my mum/grandma, i learnt to knit when an aunt took me aside and told me i WAS going to learn there and then. i learnt to cook by watching/helping my mum and grandma, and dammit i'm good at it too!!
i can't for the life of me crochet, i've tried so much but it just doesn't work for me.
i'm glad tho that i have the Os'rs to teach me more as i figure its a good thing to keep learning as much as i can and heck one day i might manage to master crochetNonny mouse and Proud!!

tray cloths are beautiful and protect the nice wood from heat and spills. not needed on melamine trays............................
i just cannot wait til i can get some seeds sown, so i did some peas on the windowsil a la Alice Fowler and also some mustard . they are just peeping. i am acooking a (hopefully) delicious dinner 3 tomatoes discounted and 2 peppers ditto. chopped with lots of cheap onions and red potatoes. fry first then add a mug of water also a little garlic and basil. cook for 30 mins. will warm up lat er for dinner and add half a tinned frankfurter sliced very thin per person. it should do 6 servings and is dead cheap. i like to serve with steamed cabbage and/or sweetcorn."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0 -
I have to say I am really enjoying this OS way of life. We are on week 3 of our shopping budget and every week have been at least £9 under budget so thats reallly good. Made my own pasta last week as I get eggs from a girl at work £1.50 for 15
I want to make more bread but I want a large loaf tin, the biggest I have found is a 2lb one but I want bigger than that, any ideas of where I could get one from?
Don't know if this has already been answered I got my tin which is same size a supermarket bakery split tin loaf from a cookware shop.My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).

Oh yeah, I remmber being made to make a traycloth at primary school. Don't know why this was deemed and essential lifeskill and have never seen one since (praise be!):rotfl:

thanks for all the comments re the Doves yeast. If I am correct you don't have to "start" this one in water do you? I use my BM for kneading the dough and just added the yeast the same as the sachets. Recipe I use is 460g of flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp butter or oil and 1 tbsp of sugar and 300ml of water. I wonder if it needs a bit more sugar?
I might give it another go.
I do the same as in use the BM for making the dough then bake off in the oven.
I use
400ml water
1tsp salt
1½ tbsp sugar
20oz flour
2 tsp of dove farm yeast
put into the BM in that order so that the yeast is not touching the salt until it starts mixing

We had to embroider a dressing table set. A big mat and two smaller ones all outlined in buttonhole stitch in acid leaf green.
It took all year and I never did get on to making a skirt with a placket and buttons (the sewing curriculum was designed before zips became widely available). I'm sure that would have been so useful to know!It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I got told I was the only pupil in the history of the school whose sewing was so bad that my work had to be thrown in the bin. :rotfl:0

not copy all the currently fashionable (and expensive) ways of doing things (I'm thinking here of things like lavish Christmases and OTT birthday parties for the littlies).
I may be out of touch here as a child free young un but I always think a really really good party for little ones is a Treasure Hunt one. Tell them all to wear their best pirate outfits and set out a treasure hunt with lots of clues in your garden or a local park (if you can get enough responsible adults to watch and you live in the right kind of area) and let the kids get into teams and go off. A good treasure hunt could last them an hour but doesn't need to lead to an impressive prize, kids just like to win. You could even make them maps using paper, tea bags and a black thick marker and your hands to scuff the edges! Then afterwards you can feed them any old food on any old plates and cups, they'll be too excited/tired to care about that bit as long as there's cake!
On the other hand this may be a terrible idea and I may come to have children who hate me when I get round to babies!0
