After hearing some dire tales on here about uncaring landlords, this really does restore one's faith in human nature. And making such a financial gesture in reducing your rent must be pretty exceptional. No wonder your little smiley is bouncing happily up and down. It's nice to know that your consideration as a tenant has been appreciated in a very practical way.
Thank you - I'm still smiling today!0 -
:rotfl:Love the way it's a POTION of curry. Hopefully it has enough magical properties to enable you to dig the ground for your spuds! :rotfl:
I know what you mean about wasting food, though. I find myself glaring at the kids and saying "what was wrong with that?" if they leave the smallest thing, like half a potato or a few strands of pasta. However, nothing is wasted in our house as the dog is a complete omnivore... at least you're not like I was when the kids were little, catching myself just in time before I cut up the meat on the plate of the man I was sitting next to at a dinner party while I talked to him :eek:Laughing fit to bust something, ChocClare; can mostly spell but typing is a bit hit and miss.....Always said if I had a brain I'd be dangerous. :rotfl:Had to go and edit it lol. It's a great recipe which I stole from The Thrift Book by India Knight. Hie thee off to the library and check it out.
Know what you mean about cutting up a grown man's food; there's many a woman whose been there.......

At risk of going off topic, but I believe it is a very old style topic
It's worth everyone checking what is going on in your County or City with regard to closing libraries in the name of making cuts.
In Dorset the County Council are proposing to close 20 out of 34 libraries. There has been no consultation and there has been no proper analysis of the service to see where cuts can be made. The officer who wrote the report can't even tell us how much our library costs in total to run!.
The libraries that they propose closing are the rural ones, all the town libraries have been taken out of the equation and are not even being considered for cuts. Our nearest library will be 10 miles away so a 20 mile round trip; with an hourly bus service it will be a minimum of 3 hours to access the facilities; this is hopeless for most people especially the large elderly community that we have.
Please check what is happening around you, your town or village library may be safe this time but please support others in your County who might be trying to keep their library open!Piglet

I would certainly support Pitlanepiglet's plea to fight for your local libraries. They are such a valuable resource to all sections of the population, young and old, and I'm afraid that some of these cutbacks are throwing the baby out with the bathwater, in terms of our community facilities. Our village library, like several others, has started up a "Friends" group which is very active in organising functions to raise money to support the library and encourage its wider use and get more people through the doors. I certainly don't want to reach my old age and find that this wonderful facility is no longer there.0

Couldn't agree more. I did wonder when they introduced the computer reservation systems into the libraries round here - and I belong to the Bournemouth libraries (and regularly use at least four of them) AND the Dorset libraries (of which I use two) - whether it was the first nail in the coffin. Staff told me at the time that they'd been assured that no jobs were in danger (and those staff have now gone). For someone like me who is computer literate and can manage my library accounts online, it is brilliant. I have to drive to work via my daughter's school every day and that means I pass three libraries, so it's no problem for me to visit them. We do have a mobile library where I live (in't' sticks) but that only calls on a Thursday afternoon and presumably is largely stocked with large print Catherine Cookson and military history (though I imagine you could order stuff from them in the usual way).
I have my own sub-library on loan at any time - I carry DH's and DD's library cards in my purse as well as my own which means I can have up to 48 books, CDs and DVDs on loan at any one time in theory. I certainly couldn't survive without it - it's the best source for all kinds of non-fiction books that are so expensive to buy, as well as the latest DVDs - and of course, those books where you like the look of the cover, but wouldn't actually BUY.
My friend (who is very hard up) is an avid reader and regularly buys six or seven books a month, which she then never looks at again. Can you Adam and Eve it? She did say last time I visited that she had AT LAST joined the library. Perhaps there is some hope for her...0 -
ChocClare, don't start me on Bournemouth and Poole (climbs up on soapbox
) there are 23 libraries in the Bournemouth and Poole unitary authorities alone! Services in the east of the County shouldn't be too badly effected as the majority of the libraries will remain open for 45 hours a week and are not being considered at all. In the West we get nowt and there is a section of the county to the north that also looks to be under provided for.
As it stands they are offering a "community offer" where we could take on running our libraries but this would be without any central services, so the automated systems would be taken out, no internet connections - so we'd be left with an initial stock of books and nothing else.
It makes me very cross....but I'll stop now :rotfl:Piglet

Am 1000% behind the libraries; I virtually live in mine and will be over there in a minute. It's nothing more than barbarism to close a library. My county is OK thus far but an adjacent one is running amok like Attila the Hun with a grudge. I've gotta get on FB tomorrow and catch up with ma gurls, including one woman whom I met on holiday a couple of years aog who is high up in that county's library service. Want to check she's OK and see if there's anything I can do.
Honestly, it's the library is only ruddy thing that I think justifies the council tax.

Hi everyone,
topic close to my heart (libraries). I think we are OK here in W. Wales, but would urge anyone who has a library card to use it as much as possible to keep their local figures up. And if you haven't got one, join! Libraries are such an important community resource for everyone, but especially older people and those of us who are financially challenged! Vast repositories of all things OS and usually, if they haven't got a book they will get it for you. Also, should you ever find yourself without a computer....0
