16valves = a little bit more power.
8 valves cheaper & less to fix.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Generally speaking: An 8v car is less powerful than a 16v. But the 8v will produce more driveable low down torque. The 16v will produce more torque overall but at higher engine speeds which isn't always useful in a MPV that needs to lug people.The man without a signature.0

Things maybe to check;
Electrics. A French weak point. Check everything you can.
On 2.0 HDIs, rubber cushioned timing belt pulley needs replacing at same time as timing belt (60k - 70k miles) otherwise can separate.
Can suffer repeated problems with a/c and heating system.That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
Alot of manufacturers are still using 8-valve engines, especially diesel variants. Citroen/Peugeot HDi engine is one of the better diesels about, and to be honest, 8-valve engines in a disel of that era weren't much different than 16-valve models. You notice it more in petrol engined cars, where 8-valve engines seem more coarse than there smoother 16-valve alternatives. 8-Valve engines are nearly always SOCH (Single Overhead Cam), therefore cambelts tend to be easier and cheaper to replace too (if fitted).hello just quick question, im looking to buy a 2002 citroen xsara picasso 2.0 hdi exclusive, i have seen 1 im going to see tomorow but just noticed it says 8 valve in the description is this correct. if it is has anyone else had one of these mpv's in 8 valve i just persumed it would be 16v. are 8 valves ok0 -

Four valves per cylinder engines have been around for about 100 years.
My mid 70's Triumph had a 16v engine.
Bugatti fitted four valves per cylinder engines around 1910. I think Bentley started using them in 1919.
But I agree with you. Nothing wrong with 8 valve engines.0 -
I agree, although the same can't be applied to diesel engines, which, until at least the 90s, were very agriculteral, and mainly only 8-valves.Gloomendoom wrote: »Four valves per cylinder engines have been around for about 100 years.
