My Kindle 3 arrived yesterday and as soon as I turned it on, the free books I had selected and the one cheap one I bought, all on Amazon, all downloaded automatically.
I then tried some non Amazon downloads. I started with the Gutenbeg project (OOC books in US libraries) and downloaded a couple of these - now supplied in mobi format - onto my pc. I then emailed them as inserts to my Kindle 3 name@free.kindle.com addy.
As I understand these should be sent via 3g or if the account limit for personal downloads is set to £0.00 (as mine is) direct to the Kindle FOC using Whispernet. Nothing arrived. Tried again today. Nothing arrived.
What am I doing wrong?

You need to connect via WiFi.
I can't find the pdf doc on my network at home and don't have my Kindle here but from memory all I did was email the document to my Kindle email address and it just turned up over WiFi very soon after.
Ah - just checked my gmail - it looks like I only sent pdfs I wanted converting to the free.kindle.com address. Stuff that didn't need converting just went to <my kindle email>@kindle.com so that is probably what is wrong.
Stuff that doesn't need convtering can just be copied on via USB too of course and from memory mobi is supported natively.0 -
Hiya
The USB cable for the Kindle is attached to the three pin mains plug when you take it out of the box. Attach it to a PC to transfer files or to the 3-pin plug to charge the Kindle battery from the mains.
Save the attachment to your PC.
. Plug your kindle into a USB port on your pc using the provided cable.
. From explorer on the pc, drag the file to the \documents folder on the kindle.
. Unplug and read...

I assumed I am connected via wifi as the default setting. The Amazon docs I bought have all arrived ok and the little bars for connectivity are showing on my Kindle screen. Is there something specific I need to do to connect to wifi as well?
I could transfer the documents via the usb cable I suppose but I am trying out all the options at present to get familiar with it. This time I was trying how to email "personal" documents (ie non Amazon) to myself and see if they appeared on the Kindle directly. So far, although the documents I chose are said to be "Kindle ready" ie in .mobi format, they have not arrived. (I have checked the sync screen).
I am using Outlook Express and including the documents as attachments. I am emailing to mykindlename@free.kindle.com That is the correct way isn't it?
I have the Kindle 3 + which has both 3g and wifi. To avoid paying for 3g you are advised to always use the free kindle option when sending personal documents.0 -
Check the manual on your Kindle for which email to use as I've certainly used two different ones and it looks like I only sent pdfs with convert in the subject to the free.kindle.com email.
+++ update +++
the help page in the link further down explains the email addresses. free.kindle.com is fine.
To connect via WiFi you will have had to select your own access point and input the password. You can also turn WiFi on and off.
I can see that I had emails like this back...

I have the latest Kindle 3 with 3g + wifi and on this model you cannot switch between 3g and wifi. It is all on or all off. According to the user guide, it uses wifi when available and 3g when it is not.
For downloading personal documents (ie all non amazon stuff) you incur a small charge when using 3g. However this can be avoided by emailing the document as an insertion to yourname@free.kindle.com or by setting a top limit of £0.00 on your 3g account which will force an automatic divert to whispernet wifi (ditto if you use up a pre set limit).
I am beginning to think this option doesn't actually work properly at present. Has anyone out there actually emailed a non Amazon mobi document to their Kindle?0 -
I'm unsure about mobi but I've certainly emailed a number of document types with no problem to my WiFi only Kindle. Have you set up the WiFi on it and confirmed that it works?0
-
I do it all the time, i've a Wi-Fi only kindle and I usually forward word docs and emails to my kindle via email and i've never had a problem.Laters

I've not had any problems either so I suspect its something on your Kindle that isn't quote set up properly.
I think the first thing to check is whether you are actually connected via 3G or WiFi....most devices tell you which connection it is using - I would have thought the Kindle was the same (tho mine is the WiFi only version so I can't check this myself). I think 3G is the default connection, it will only be able to use Wi-Fi if you have manually selected your network and logged in. When I'm connected to Wi-Fi I have a little box in the top right corner of the screen which says Wi-Fi. Do you have this?
As I understand it the free.kindle.com address will only work when you are connected to Wi-Fi, it will not work when you are only connected to 3G.0 -

I would recommend reading the documentaion that came with your Kindle.
If you have a 3G one it will connect straight out of the box as you have found.
To connect to your wifi network you select menu from the home page, then settings, then wifi. You will need to have your passcode to hand.
The kindle will automatically select wifi over 3G when in range.
A previous poster has told you how to copy non Amazon books via USB, no need to fiddle around with e-mail.

I can confirm that it works just fine sending a .mobi to my WiFi only Kindle.0
