I have a treadle machine.. it was £10 from charity shop.. it is beautiful.. and I have no idea how to keep it going and the timing is NEVER right so it won't sew a thing..
Where does it say what it is? Mine is just a monster..
I have just discovered it was the 1949 model manufactured in Clydebank, Scotland(4th March.. which is now my sons birthday!). 15K model apparently.Sue
Do I need to eat it
Can I afford the calories:eek:
have I checked for a lower calorie version:T0 -
Thanks for the info about models with different needles dianah - that's helpful to know. Freecycle and gumtree don't really extend out here (Scottish island) and things like treadle sewing machines, ranges and tilley lamps mostly all flung out with hasty relief as soon as mains electricity came.
i live on the isle of man so i feel your pain. we actually do have freecycle though! i only just discovered it!
are there any auction houses? chances are they tip them but if you call and say you'd like one, they'll keep it for you (that's what i've done and they were happy to do that)
i've put a free ad on the internet and the only person who came back to me has a jones treadle - they use funny needles as well. red cross has one but it's a 306 so no good.

have a look on this website:http://www.raindropkites.co.uk/sewingmachines/howtotreadle.html - it's got instructions on how to learn to treadle0 -

Found out it's a 99k make in 1957 so nearly as old as me. Didn't have any bobbins, so bought some on e-bay and they arrived today.
Wound a bobbin, got threading instructions online and sewed my first test seam - absolutely astounded as it's perfect. Tension is fine, stiches are even, absolutely great. :T
Lot less hassle than my electric machine, (which is great but a bit temperamental at times).
Over the moon as I had intended just to display this, but now considering using it regularly to save on the electric certainly when I only want to do a straight seam.
Sorry for babbling but had to share this with someone!:D
wow good find:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0 -
what a great find . i love my old singer. i inheritad it from my hubbys great nan. it is so easy to use. however i was given an old jones machine back in sept. i got it serviced but been to scared to use it. my old singer only does a single stitch forward or back. but the jones can take 3 needles, does button holes, embroidery, even really cute butterfly and swan stitches. Yesterday i was so fed up with feeling ill i had a play on it. OMG it is amazing. after sitting there for an hour with the manual going through each stage it is so easy. and quiet and fast. The service cost £48, so effectivly the machine cost me £48 but it is worth it weight in gold i feel. it also does something called a golden stitch gonna have to google that as it didn't seem very clear on instruction's.0

if your jones uses the round shank needle, you may want to stock up as they do not make them anymore. you can still get them from people who have the old stock for about £4 for 5 needles but once those supplies are depleted, that's it.0 -
ok thankyou for that. i've no idea what needles it uses. not even attempted the instructions on how to get needle in and out ,lol. but i will give the model number to my local sewing machine shop and find out if they are what i need. is there a universal one for it?0
-
sorry bout the late reply!
no universal i'm afraid. all the ones that are around are the ones left from when they were still being produced - your local shop probably won't have these. you can get them from here http://www.raindropkites.co.uk/sewingmachines/needles.html#needles or try ebay.
oh oh, i have to share - i got a treadle a week ago from the hospice shop SO exciting! but the face plate was missing the needle guide and it was messing up the tension. i ordered one from the page i linked and it arrived today so i swapped them round and it's all ready to goi'm not too bad using it either! i wonder how many calories you burn treading!

I completely understand! I am still hoping to find a working (or one that can be made to work again) singer treadle! Enjoy your "new" machine!
Hi they are about. Have you looked on ebay? you may have to travle to pick one up but they dont go for a great deal of money:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j0 -
might sound obvious - check your jones uses these type of needles before you get them. it may not
i don't know much about jones machines - all three of mine are singers! but i was considering getting a jones treadle (there was one for sale) before i got my singers and was warned about the needle issue. if i was given one it would have been different but given i was buying, i just waited for a singer. didn't take long really!
do you have a manual for yours? if not, they may be available to download online, loads of singer ones are on there for free.0 -
I have a hand powerd one.
Mine is even older than yours.
1930s mine is. works like a dream.
Ebay is great for parts and other bit for them.
Good luck with yours:jYou can have everything you wont in lfe, If you only help enough other people to get what they wont.:j0
