New York flight deals

My partner & I are planning on seeing in New Year 2011 / 2012 in New York.
We don't require accommodation, and therefore, seeking advice from any flight experts, we plan on departing UK around 27/28/29 December, and returning to the UK on or around 02/03/04 January, dates are flexible.
When is the best time to book flight tickets.
Should we book direct with an airline, if so, any suggestions which airline offers the best deal?
Or, should we use a 3rd party agent, if so, are Expedia the best site for any deals?
I'm aware how early we are, but would like to have some kind of idea what price range we're looking at.
TIA

Have a look at www.kayak.co.uk and see what price you can get now. Then we'll let you know whether we think prices will rise or fall - although be aware that we can only make educated guesses!Gone ... or have I?0

It's peak time, they don't need to offer deals.

Thanks, but I can't quote that site
Tried Kayak, £389.00 pp return with Kuwait Airways
All other fares are above £389.00 & include a stop over.0 -

I would rather pay a bit extra to fly with KLM, plus I actually enjoy Schipol airport!Gone ... or have I?0 -
