Windows Live messenger freezes

Using windows live messenger on windows 7
have http://apatch.org/ and msn plus installed aswell
every now and then the windows just freeze up and don't respond - have to end the process and start messenger again
Checking in task manager the process isn't using any more cpu or ram than normal so it doesn't seem it is crashing due to a processing error (task manager also thinks everything is ok as it never switches the status to not responding just stays as 'Running' even though it has gone unresponsive - no error messages from the application either)
thinking it might be the apatch? anyone using it on windows 7 ok?

Are you talking about the newest version of messenger? Me and my OH both have problems with it freezing (on mine the messenger window goes black and I have to exit then start again). We don't have any 'patches'.£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit

no the one just before - have avoided upgrading as the new one is more of a social media thing than a messenger it seems0
