Confused - Gd credit, refused CCs

Thanks Tixy,
You're quite correct i wont be trying to use all of the bad ways to spend abroad. My mistake.
However, the MSE advice makes a lot of sense. I have credit and debit cards which i would normally use, but which attract an exchange rate premium. It would make a lot more sense to have an efficient credit card. You're right, that there are other cards I could apply for.
However, the point I was trying to make, hamfistedly, was that I daren't apply for any other of the recommended cards for the exact reasons you state - my credit record will show multiple applications.
It would make a lot more sense if the card issuer would tell me why they rejected my application. Do you know what the other factors they use are? If i'm not a credit risk, you'd think they could tell me in advance what requirements I'd need to meet in advance of making the application.0 -
Do you know what the other factors they use are?
Income
Long time at address
Long time with employer
Long time with bank
Available credit to salary
Used credit to salary
Used credit to available credit
Recent searches
Number of existing credit facilities (revolving, ie credit cards and overdrafts, and fixed term, ie mortgage and loans)
Financial associates
Etc
Etc0 -
With Halifax, you are more likely to be rejected if you don't have any other accounts with them. Their credit scoring seems to weigh in favour of applicants who are existing customers. This seems to be the trend anywayDebt free and staying that way! :beer:0

I also applied for a Halifax Clarity CC (for using abroad) ...and have been refused.
I have excellent credit - have never defaulted on debt in the past. Have paid of my mortgage and use my other credit card regularly - paying off the balance in full every month. I have never been refused any type of credit before.
I looked at the eligibilty rules after my refusal and it states must be over 18 and have a UK Bank Account.
Now, during the application it asks for bank details, and says that these are optional, so I didn't bother to fill them in ... could this be the problem? they think that you don't have a bank account ...if so, why make this optional ?
BTW, I have accounts with Halifax - with their online bank.
I will be really annoyed if this refusal blots my otherwise perfect credit rating !!
I have written to Halifax asking for a full explanation for this refusal ...so will post their reply when I receive it (hopefully!)0 -
Just an update for anyone interested.
After waiting for about 2 weeks for an answer - I got an agreement in the post to sign - I had been accepted after all!
When I phoned and asked why it said that I'd been refused in the online application, I was told that there must be something wrong with their website.
I then said that it was happening to other people with good credit ratings as reported on this forum ...and she said that she would feed this back to management - I wouldn't hold your breath though !!0
