Laptop warranty upgrade - value?

My Dell Inspiron 1750 has just had a glitch whereby it would not switch on or off - dead screen after the windows logo. I had to hold the on button down to get it to switch off, then rebooted. It is now back to life but it made me think about the so called rip off warranty extension.

I've been quoted £60/yr or £90/2 yrs by Dell to extend the warranty (comp is a year old). Does not include wear/tear or accident.

Does that sound reasonable compared to other money savers experiences?

Cheers

I think most people would find that blasting the heatsink out with some compressed air once a month would prevent the above.

that sort of thing happens on many machines, usually due to hibernation

I understand that would be wise to stop it over heating.

But is the refusal to switch on/off an over heating issue?

    Thanks.

Hmmmmmm. I've not checked that. It does go to 'sleep' but maybe there is also a hibernation setting that is doing this?

    Hope so.

    Cheers :)

hibernation is just flaky sometimes, deleting hiberfil.sys may help.

Your money would be better spent on a backup device, the sale of goods act will give you some protection against hardware failures in the short term, post warranty, should they happen.

  • haven't had issues with hibernation

but have noticed windows updates can do this sometimes
  • I wouldn't normally be tempted by warranty upgrade, but:

Just had a new Nintendo DSI after 2.5 yrs from a warranty - another story, Currys wriggled but eventually paid up.

And, Dell replaced a faulty fan after 4 months, that would have been 90 quid I bet, so I am undecided.

    Will check hibernation first.

So far I have had 2 motherboards, 3 chargers and a new battery from this.

Defo worth it - and DELL have been outstandingly good. Highlt recommended (even tho the pc has had issues they have done their best to sort things out asap)

If they were outstandingly good they would've fixed the problem first time.

Seconded. Fixing your own poor quality manufactured item isn't really "outstandingly good service" as it shouldn't have occurred in the first place.
