What happens if I cancel???

I'm going to book an RTW ticket this week. I have read the t's & c's of the company i am booking with and I am confident my flights are covered against cancellations on their part. But what happens if I cancel (for any reason)? Am I going to need to get travel insurance now (even though I don't travel for months) to cover this?? Help?!

Usually when you cancel you are only entitled to get the tax back...dependant on the airline and the type of ticket that you purchase.

You need to get travel insurance as soon as the flights as booked to cover cancellation for an insurable reason such as illness or accident. You cannot get travel insurance to cover cancellation for ANY reason.

Read the policy wording so you are clear what is and isn't covered.
  • Be very careful to read the 'small print', especially the exclusions around cancellation. If you have a medical condition then clearly you have to declare it in order to be insured both from a cancellation, and a becoming ill on holiday point of view. Also, if you have a family member - for example an elderly parent - with an ongoing medical condition, even if they are well otherwise and there is no reason for them to become ill and cause you to cancel, some insurers will not cover for cancellation in these circumstances. Their policy wordings are all slightly different. As far as medical cover for the travellers is concerned, don't think that having an E111 is enough for europe. It will certainly get you the medical care that is available for citizens of that country (none of them being free of course), but the E111 will most definitely NOT cover for repatriation, which can be extremely expensive if an air ambulance is required. It will also not cover for a body to be returned if in the unfortunate event someone with a medical condition dies. Travel insurance is a complete minefield and the cheapest one is not always the best, depending upon individual circumstances.
