Why do catalogues do that........................

Let you ring an 0870 number, go through all the choices (several minutes), say you are in a queue then say they are very busy ring back later and cut you off:mad:

Additions and Littlewoods do this:mad:

More likely they want you ring a premium line and make more money from that than selling shoddy goods.

If it was a premium rate number than that may be true.

My guess would be that it is to cook their figures.... board says that Y% of calls must be answered within X minutes/ seconds.... call centre know they wont meet the target given their budget for staff so look for ways of doing it. One government department was somewhat famous for advertising that they answered 98% of calls within 3 rings.... they achieved this by having an answer phone that picked up on the 3rd ring.

If you use a catalogue and its 0870 have you any choice but to ring them on that number?

Rang twice this evening. Exactly the same message ' all our advisors' etc and tells you to ring back then goes engaged.

I've emailed them. Want to cancel something that shouldnt even be on my statement otherwise I wouldnt bother.

I havent had anything from them for over a year then they send me 4 bottles of Vax shampoo I didnt order, then charge me for a guarantee extension I dont want. I've emailed a complaint and told them to cancel my account.

  • When I am considering giving money to a company, I look into whether or not they have 0870 numbers. If they do, I consider it a subliminal message that they don't want my business, so I promptly go elsewhere :D

0870 IS a premium rate. The company makes money by using it. So they're not going to complain if people are hanging around!

0870/ 0871 are special rate numbers - yes the company receive a cut of the phone costs

09 telephone numbers are premium rate numbers and are subject to much greater legislation/ control and the company receive a much larger percentage of the costs.
